Raymarine Electronics

Our Hunter 36 came from the factory with the standard Raymarine St40 depth and speed and no other Raymarine electronics. We opted for the Raymarine C-80 chartplotter, the 4000 autopilot, the ST60 Wind, the ST-60 speed and depth. We were informed by Raymarine that if we ran a cable from the C-80 to the cabin, we could interface with our laptop computer if we bought their Raytech software. The Raytech was delayed coming out. Then, our instruments were not installed correctly and we found out from the authorized Raymarine dealer that he knew and the Hunter dealer kew that they were not installed correctly, but because the Hunter dealer said that he did not care and did not want to pay to have it done correctly, then we just had the problem. We tried to get the Raymarine dealer to fix the problems and agreed to pay him, but its New Orleans and he refused. What can we say. The Big Easy is a big Rat's Nest. Anyway, we contacted West Marine and they referred us to a very competent "non authorized" installer who did reinstall everything correctly. When it came to the C-80 laptop interface, he consulted with Raymarine directly and installed a seatalk interface which worked, except that the capability to make transfers of waypoints and routs did not work. Of course this was the major reason we purchased the Raytech software and incurred the expense of having the interface in the first place and we were never informed of these limitations when we agreed to purchase all of the equipment and the software. Then, Raymarine told us that if we wanted this capability we would need a NEMA interface as oppsed to the seatlk interface and they would give us nothing for the expenses we had incurred for installing the seatalk interface which they told us to do, but never informed us of the limitations. Now we have the NEMA interface and the S-60 wind does not show up on the laptop(however, it did when we had the seatalk interface) because Raymarine says that it will not work with NEMA(but they did not inform us of this limitation when they told us that we would have to use NEMA if we wanted to make transfers). A Tech at Raymarine said that he was not happy with the fact that all of the raymarine gear associated with a C-80 had to work with NEMA and not seatalk and that he was trying to get this changed so that it would work with seatalk. Of course if this happens, then we would incur the expense on changing back to seatalk(again all our expense). Then another Tech person informed us that they were about to release a new version of the "firware" to go on the C-80 which would allow the wind information to appear on the laptop in the Raytech software. Anyway, if this ever gets figured out it will be great, but why can't they do it before the end user has to have all of these problems and incur all of these needless expenses? Has anyone else had any experience with this? We will appreciate your comments!

Have you talked to Hunter ?

I had issues with my boat upon delivery, and Hunter was EXTRAORDINARILY helpful in the resolution. Although, none of my issues were with third party vendoors. I went from "I'm never buying another Hunter" to "Hunter will be my next boat as well" after the factory stepped in. I am sure they would be interested in resolving issues with a dealer who has a Scr*w you attitude. Good luck Jeff

Jeff - This problem is minor compared to all of the other problems that we have had with the Hunter Dealer. Hunter has helped and allowed us to have warranty work(for items installed at the factory/non commissioning) done at another location(not a Hunter Dealer). The Hunter Dealer that we bought the boat from has been written up in the Louisiana Inspector General's report concerning the the corruption concerned with the aftermath of Katrina and the New Orleans harbor. The Hunter Dealer sold us all of the Raymarine equipment and he and the raymarine dealer did the faulty installation. He also failed on servicing the Yanmar(he is a yanmar dealer), installation of the generator(he is a fischer panda dealer), installing the batteries, installing the stereo, installing the TV antenna, installing the remote mike for the VHS,installing the mast and sails, etc.etc.etc. The dealer is "very bad news!". At this point, we just ask, why is he still allowed to be a dealer?

Auto Pilot is O.K.

I think that the heading comes from the auto pilot and this is showing up on the laptop and the autopilot does work with the GPS C-80 so I don't think that this would change anything. Raymarine did not offer this as a solution but did acknowledge the problem. Thanks

Raymarine Instruments

John Not much I can do to help you but the dealer you worked with does not appear to be very reputable. We purchased a Hunter 356 that initially had just the ST 60 Wind and Depth and Speed Instruments. A few years later we purchased the C80 chartplotter. The Hunter dealer went out of his way to make sure everything worked correctlyvia the seatalk circuit. As far as transfering waypoints from our laptop, we havn't figured that out yet but think we might be able to do it by transferring the data from the computer to the CF card and then load the CF card into the C80.

Seatalk Interface

I know at this point you probably don't want to spend more money or make it more complicated but Raymarine does offer a Seatalk Interface box that will make NMEA and Seatalk compatible. I had to install one to get the Seatalk info (including GPS data) to talk to my laptop (I have the Nobeltec charting program). After installing the interface I can now access all Seatalk info (depth,wind,speed, and GPS nav data) on my laptop.

Seatalk Interface Box

We already had the interface box installed. Yes,then we were able to get the wind data on the laptop, but because Raytech software and the C-80 are not set up to do data transfers on setalk, we had to change to Nema to do the data transfer. However, then we learned that the ST60 data does not tranfer on Nema so hence no data display on the laptop. However the tech at Raymarine said that the next software update for the C-80 should enable the wind data that the C-80 receives from the ST60 to be transfered on Nema to the laptop. Yes, you can transfer data to flash cards from the C-80 and then read them on a flashcard reader on the laptop and vice versa, but we paid the price for the program that was suppose to allow us to do direct transfers without the flach cards. So, this is our biggest complaint - that based on what was represented to us by Raymarine before we agreed to purchase the software, they did not disclose all of these limitations and only after they had our money, we became aware of all of the limitations and problems. If they do enable the C-80 to send the wind data to the laptop, we will feel better and when and if they get the bugs out it should be a great navigation aid - we just wish that they would not use our time and money for their R&D. We also wish we had a Hunter Dealer like the ones you have. It is such a shame that with all of the problems created by Katrina that the Hunter Dealer was apparantly from our perspective and the Louisiana Inspector General and continues to be a major problem in the New Orleans recovery process and also a shame that Raymaine and the New Orleans Raymarine dealer seems to be going along with this Hunter Dealer as it relates to us.:{
