I recently purchased and had installed a Raymarine C70 GPS Chartplotter/Radar. I am experiencing intermittent problems with the unit completely shutting down and then coming back up again. It is kind of like a re-boot on a computer. The boat yard where I purchased the unit (and my boat) seems to be baffled by it. They have switched out units once already. The guy that owns the marina where I keep my boat is saying that he heard that Raymarine is having a known problem with the software in the C70 and are actively working on a fix. I would be curious to know if anyone else is having the same problem or has any info on it. It is very aggravating since it always seems to happen when I need it the most. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Phone or write them.

Call them or email them from their support page. I found them extremely helpful with issues with my ST4000+ MkII.

Enough Power?

When I first had my C80 + GPS installed, they put them on a separate breaker from the rest of my Seatalk instruments (although connected in the Seatalk chain). If I power the regular instruments before the C80/GPS, the GPS never sync's to satelites and the ST4000 says "seatalk failure". We found this was due to the GPS requiring enough amps that it drew the Seatalk buss down too low, then even if the other breaker was turned on none of the devices had booted correctly. Bottom line - check the Seatalk chain for adequate power and start-up sequencing. HTH, Barry Bear Necessity H33 #128

Chances are, Power is the Problem

Had a similar problem with another Raymarine GPS/Chartplotter. A seperate powerr feed from the panel solved the problem. Make sure that there is a seperate power feed from the the panel directly to the C70. It should not be daisy-chained from the instrument or autopilot power terminals. Also, verify that you have adequate gauge power wiring from your breaker panel to the helm, especially if the distance is substantial. Good Luck!

Problems with C80

My problems are slightly different. The first unit would crash completly, the replacement unit behaved itself for a while but is now very eratic when zooming and on the split screen the chart is locked in the 4000 miles scale. Other iritations to boring to list. My dealer has not admitted to a software fix. The unit has its own circuit-breaker and a substantial wire feeding it. I agree, this is very agravating, but apart from screaming at the dealer I have no suggestions.

Same thing w/C80

...just took delivery on a new boat with the C80 installed and I am having the exact problem. My dealer told me last week that Raymarine has a SW upgrade fix which will either be out soon or is already out. I called Raymarine today...waited over 1 hour on hold with their support line with no one ever picking up. (makes me wish I bought a Garmin, my experience with their support group is excellent) My dealer said the problem is the present SW has a hard time handleing all the data on the Navionics Gold Charts. Repair Update

Raymarine today (7/15) told me that the SW fix is now ready. They are sending CF (Compact Flash) cards with the fix to dealers. If you can burn a CF card at home, the SW update is available on the Raymarine website under the SW update link and you should be able to do this yourself. They may send end-users a card directly if you give them a credit card # to hold until you send them back the card. Joe

C80 ok?

I have a C80 and just took the boat from Charleston to Jacksonville. It seemed to perform satisfactorily but I do recall it shutting down once or twice - I put this to my unfamiliarity with the unit. On one stretch on the ICW it did not show the track. I thought it was a Navionics issue. Any idea which units need the SW upgrade? Mine was installed in May.

C Series Software Update

I would assume that all C70, C80 + C120 sold before July need this update. Considering it was just made public this week. You can download the software (see link below) onto a Compact Flash card and load it into your display yourself. Besides fixing some bugs, they have also added some new features. C80 units need upgrade

I have a C80 which definitely needs an upgrade. I had a Raymarine 425 before this unit. The 425 was very stable and did not mind if you were familiar with it or not. On top of the obvious Raymarine problems I have noticed detail missing from the Navionics presention, it will be interesting to see if this is a Raymarine problem or a Navionics problem. I was very dissapointed to find that the first time I used the Navionics chart in anger several bouys had been moved from where my new Navionics chart showed them. This, combined with the Raymarine short comings, severely degraded the systems usefulness. I have only recently discovered that the chart plotter has a declutter command so maybe this has been removing detail. The upgrade on the Raymarine site is for all C series units. I shall try downloading the upgrade this weekend and let you know how it goes. Hopefully these problems will shortly be behind us. Incidentally the radar works like a charm through all of this.

C series upgrade is a success

I down loaded the upgrade this week end and upgraded my C-80. The process went very smoothly and the result is a completely transformed unit. You will be very happy with this upgrade.
