I'm going to be ordering the Raymarine C series radar and gps for my boat. I'll be mounting the display on the pedestal in front of the wheel. I have a Hunter 36 (356) with the extended height pedestal. I'm looking for feedback on the size of the display. They make 3 different sizes: 6-8- and 10 in. I want good readability but yet not have a huge obstacle to look over. Any experiance? Pro and cons etc... Right now, I'm thinking about the 8 in. Thanks

Raymarine chartplotter

Jack. We have a 306 Hunter with an 8 inch Raymarine C series chartplotter. Even though we have a standard pedestal guard, the 8" plotter is just great. You might find that the shade of a bimini helps in reading the display in bright sun (which is always almost always a factor on the Chesapeake Bay). I would judge that a 10" plotter would be intrusive above your wheel, and a 6 inch one is just two small.

Raymarine Unit

Jack, The 8" unit is probably as large as you will want to go in that location. Even so, you may find that it is a lot of mass up high and a bit in the way. I've never been very fond of the way that Hunter designed the 356/36 pedastal bar. You have to mount up pretty high because a lower mounting vovers two of the instrument positions on the pedastal pod. We redesigned ours (it was expensive) and had a new one bent. Ours is the same up to the pedastal pod and then bends forward following the same angle as the pedastal face and then bends up again. This offsets the whole thing forward enough to allow an instrument pod to sit lower and still not cover the pedastal pod. I looked for a picture, but could not find one. The end result is a slightly lower over all height, room for the pod and keeps all the instruments a little closer together in front of the wheel. I believe that the newer bars are two piece and the break is somewhere around the pedastal. If so, you might only have to get the upper section rebuilt if you wanted to do what we did. Would be much cheaper and easier to install.

8 inches here

on my 33. The perfect size and we are pleased. On our 290 the instruments were installed above the hatch (into the cabin) so we also like that model of alternative placements of instruments. Guess it depends on your height. For us the 8 was perfect, and I am not shy about saying we have 8 "

Raymarine C-Series

Raymarine offers the C70, C80 and C120. All of these units are identical in spec and funcionality/features except for the screen size. The one exception to this is that the C70 screen is not as bright as the C80 or C120. This coupled with the fact the the C80 isn't a whole lot bigger leads me to the conclusion that the C80 is the best option for the pedestal. If you were considering mounting the display on on the cabintop, I'd say go for the C120. The C80 is by far Raymarine's most popular size. Get the 2kw or 4kw dome and a Navionics chip and you're set up with a great standalone chartplotter or radar with overlaying ability to boot! Add the DSM 250 digital sounder and you have a top of the line fishfinder as well! Best, Trevor
