The old Autohelm 4000 bit the dust and I just ordered a Raymarine S1(West Marine priced matched the internet suppliers) . The S1 has 5 pieces to install where the old Authelm had 2. Anybody out there install a one of these ? And if so where did you located all the parts . My current thinking is to: 1. Obviously mount the Drive unit on the wheel 2. The control head on the Edson post in a navpod 3 The Fluxgate under the aft cabin 4. The control box in the starboard lazarette 5. The Rudder Transducer - don't use it since

The rudder transducer....

Don't skip the rudder transducer install. I have it on my H410 with the Raymarine 6000 unit. It provides very useful information as to exactly where the rudder is positioned, which is useful in many situations, including docking. In addition, my autopilot is amazingly accurate and I assume that the rudder transducer plays a part in that. We just ran 30 hours from Atlantic City to Block Island in one long straight downwind (wind off the port quarter at 15 to 20 kts continuously for 20 hours before it died at 5am) and all we needed to do was keep lookout, Otto did all the steering. You didn't finish your sentence about it, but it appears to be a very simple install, it mounts under the removable floor behind the helm, attached to the quadrant at the top of the rudder post. Just happened on the following link after answering you. It shows a rudder transduce installation. http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rudder_position_sensor

you MUST install the rudder transducer on the s1

The s1 will not work without it. That's a change from the st4000 model. The s1 with an internal gyro doesn't need the rudder transducer, but it's a more expensive version of the s1.
