I just purchased an older boat with this unit - it is missing several parts and needs a pedestal mount - does anyone out there know a good source for replacement parts ?

They stopped making those years ago

unfortunately, because they worked a lot better than the models they replaced them with.

Best bet is Craigslist or eBay. Individual parts are hard to come by. I was able to obtain a new cam lever (connector of motor to mount) from Raymarine a year or so ago, so try them, too.

I have an older autohelm unit.

Is this the one that has an open drive belt? I bought one on ebay for my last boat and never installed it. I sold it through the classifieds on this website but the new owner said the control box didn't work so I refunded his money and took it back. It is complete (including the pedestal mount) and even has spare parts but the electronics aren't working. There are rules on this site about selling stuff in the forums and I really don't want to violate them. At the risk of breaking the rules, you can contact me through my profile on this site.

spadaforaj,

I guess they changed things with the new site. You used to be able to email someone through their profile. Anyway, email me at brandywine at nni dot com.

Are there any autopilots available like on the Catalina 30's

Does anyone remember the only remotes the Catalina 30's had? I used one once and it was just a motor with a belt on the wheel and a wired remote (wireless would be great). On the remoter were 4 buttons for 1 degree left and right and 5 or 10 degree (can't recall) left and right. When I first saw it, I was thinking piece of crap until I used it and found I could go all over the cockpit and play with stuff and still steer the boat. Would love to get my hands on one of them. I like the new X-5, but at $1250.00 it is a bit of overkill.

Stu, That is not the one. That is so much more fancy. The unit I used had the motor and belt and a wired remote with just 4 buttons (1 degree left, 1 degree right, 10 degree left, 10 degree right). I believe it was turned on when you engaged the belt with the tension lever. Very simple and worked great. For the price of that one you are better with the Raymarine X-5 and the wireless remote as the cost is about the same.
