my recentley acquired H27 has a 2gm yanmar. There is no strainer on the line from the through hull to the water pump, I plan to install one but before doing so just want the benefit of your experience. Is this no strainer set-up normal, did someone take the old one out or what? comments // advice please.

I'm pretty sure I don't have one, nor have I missed not having one. Besides being aware of engine temp. via gauge, I often check the exhaust discharge for a good flow of water ( it surges every 3-4 seconds, not a steady flow).

Install A Strainer

Every boat I have owned had a raw water strainer before the engine. The water pump impeller on your 2GM is designed as a water pump and not a debris disintegrator. Even when cruising in water that appears clean I find debris in my strainer. They are cheap, easy to install and good insurance against impeller failures. I also installed a strainer in the raw water supply hose to my toilet after twice having debris clog the toilet valve to remain open. I am surprised how much debris it collects. I would never be without a strainer on an inboard engine.

Just do it- install one- not that expensive and will save you tons of grief when you need the engine to work and have no time to risk a conk out and the ensuing time it takes to cool and clean out the line. Also, with reduced wear, it will extend the life of your impeller - which ain't too cheap in themselves.

Crab Trap

My 27' didn't come with a strainer either. But after sucking up a baby crab into my new 2 hour old impeller and grinding both him (her?) and the impeller into mush I put one in. Trapped a small fish and other nasties but so far haven't had to replace the impeller yet. I had not thought about putting one in the head intake line but that makes alot of sense. I think I'll do that in the next few weeks
