raw water strainer location

I need to relocate my raw water strainer to a more suitable area.It will be positioned to where the bottom of the strainer is about one quarter of an inch above the water line.I dont see that this is a problem as long as I fill it to get it's initial prime,if I even need to prime it.Right now the egine is out of my hunter 34 w/yanmar 3gmf for rebuild.Any experiences would be appreciated.

It doesn't matter

'cuz the raw water pump sucks water through anyway. Put it where it's most convenient for you, waterline no object.

I think it does matter

but I don't know the answer. The top of my strainer was loose the other day so it broke the suction. When tightened down water flowed fine. There seems to be the right spot where removing the top for cleaning does not flood the engine when not running, but there is still enough flow to fill the bowl. I would like to know the "right" answer.
