Has anyone replaced the cork gasket that is in the cover to the raw water strainer? I have a 1992 H28 and the strainer appears to be the original and the gasket is compressed pretty far. Is it possible to use rubber instead of cork?

The gasket is made by Perko, and your ship's store sells a replacement kit for less tha $20 that includes the bottom cork gasket as well. It's easy to pry out the old ones and insert the new ones. Don't make the mistake that I did over the years of over-tightening the two wing nuts, for I finally stripped one and had to replace the entire mechanism.

Strainer Gasket

Several years ago I removed the original cork gasket, took it to West Marine and they had the identical gasket in stock.

Rubber should be fine

Just keep an eye on it. You can also probably use some thick gasket sealer. It is just water that you are sealing so anything should work as long as it seals. $20 sounds like a lot for a cork gasket but if it is a "marine" item.... I would expect to find an o-ring for less than a buck or else make one from an old inner tube.
