I have a 97 hunter 430 with the Vovlo 50 hp MD22. my raw water pump is leaking badly at the shaft. I am having real trouble finding a replacement and/or a rebuild kit. I am sure there is a bushing or seal that has been demolished but O rings are not stemming the tide. It is a jabsco pump but they are telling me it was made only for volvo and only volvo can sell it, volvo tells me they cant identify the jabsco number I have from the pump, not to mention volvos prices. it seems to me that any similar rate pump would work as long as it matches up with the mounting bracket and drive belt. I am looking for ideas and contacts to get this fixed.

Take it to a shop that rebuilds them.

Monty: You should be able to find a shop that can rebuild the pump for you. Look around and see what you can find. It will probably save you $200-300 bucks.

My experience with Volvo parts is not good

Monty- I have the same engine as you and every time I go to buy a Volvo part the parts guy has to chase the item through several part number changes. Their part numbers seem to be a dealer secret. My understanding is that the raw water pump is a Jabsco, but I have never found a Jabsco model number that matches it. The impeller is a Jabsco 1210-0001. I have bought and used them successfully. The number on the water pump cover is 3582510 but I don't know if that is the number for the cover or for the whole pump. If you get a Jabsco model number, please post it. I looked at the Depco catalog and I didn't see a pump that looked like my Volvo pump.

part numbers

Rich, a very helpful fellow at jabsco gave me the following #3580946 crosses to Jabsco Model# 29540-1101. how he got the 946# I dont know as the number you list is the # shown on my impeller cover as well. however he also said that jabsco couldn't sell the part at it was made specifically for volvo. but he did give me this # for another company to try Depco Pumps - 1-800-446-1656.

update

I called Depco. they were very helpful. a new seal for the impeller was a whold 6 bucks. they cant sell the pump either as it is proprietary to volvo. however, it appears to me that any pump of the same flow rate would work so I am looking into an alternate pump as well.

Good info

Monty- Thanks for the input. I never knew that the pump was proprietary- no wonder I could never seem to find an alternative source. If you are going to rebuild your pump, I think you should replace the bearings as well as both seals. And also look closely for any other wear. I have rebuilt a couple of pumps- this Volvo pump and one for my Westerbeke genset. The Westerbeke uses a Johnson pump. In both cases, the pump failed again after only a few hundred hours. The cause was unknown. But either I somehow screwed up the rebuild on both pumps (no job is so simple it can't be screwed up) or there is some wear parameter that I am un-aware of. Or I am very unlucky. Anyway, I would consider a rebuilt pump to be a good spare but realize that it may have substantially less life than a new pump. If you find a good substitute for the original pump, please let me know. BTW, what is the current rip-off for a Volvo pump?

Depco sold me a pump

Monty, I sent Depco a sea water pump from our Northern Lights generator. Same story, they couldn't sell me the pump. They called back to tell me that the repairs would be about 75% of the cost of a new pump. I told them that they could send me a new pump and the old pump back for parts. They did. Maybe this is not standard, but it worked for me this time. If I had ordered the pump from Northern Lights, Depco would have been the company to send me the pump anyway and the price would have been about 25% higher. Bill
