We bought our boat last Feb., it did not come with any kind of maintenance log.

So I am doing some maintenance on our engine now. Today I drained all the coolant, back flushed the whole thing, removed all the hoses and will replace them all as well as new coolant. Removed some rubber impeller parts from the front of heat exchanger !

I removed the raw water pump to replace the impeller. When I disassembled it the round plate on the back of the pump has a round circle worn in it from the center of the impeller. I assume this plate should be replaced ? Was this caused by starting the engine without opening the thru-hull, or is it just normal wear and tear (engine has 400 hours on it) ?

Normal

I am pretty sure it is normal and pretty sure I have the same marks on mine but not having any problems with it and just been changing the impeller and O ring when needed.

Mine looked the same when I rebuilt it awhile back... Just gave it a light sanding and it was back in business.

thanks for the advice Robert, I think I will do the same

your Welcome.... I like that speed seal idea...But What I really liked was awhile back was someone here on the forum modified the mounting bracket reserving the pump were the plate was facing forward... and with that speed seal. :wow:Then impeller maintenance would be a piece of cake and really rock!!!:yeah:
I wish he would let us know if the pump worked out okay mounted that way......And if so started making and producing a kit.

I bought speed seal life and really like it. It is an improvement over the regular speed seal. It has a nylon disk where the ring is on your plate. The nylon disk spins with the impeller. I also got one for my generator and they work very well. The advertise they will run dry for 10 minutes. It is true!! I can attest to it.

Jerry, good information ! I see you have to order these direct from England. How did that work for you ? how long to arrive ? any customs issues or charges ?

thanks Bob

I think it took a couple of weeks. I believe I called them first. I recommend you get the spares. Comes with some Teflon grease and a couple of space nylon disks. My generator quit and I thought it was the impeller so I checked it. Turned out the impeller was good and I then saw that the belt was toast. I changed out the belt, but forgot to open the thru hull. It ran as advertised!!! Impeller was just dust. I think with the Teflon grease you get better water flow than you would with the standard setup.

No problem with customs and It was just like I ordered it from a company in the US.

I am very satisfied and it is really quick to make an impeller change. Best I remember there is a youtube video on them.

I think Torresson may have them (SpeedSeal). The newer ones have a Teflon disk that helps reduce wear. Removing the thumb nuts beats the hell out of trying to remove those cheap phillips screws.

I had one on my 2GM and purchased a new one for my 3JH 6 years ago.

I had a chat with Alex at Speedseal this morning and he has one of his speedseallife kits in the mail for me. I have not forgotten to open the thru-hull yet but I'm sure it will happen so it may save a few impellers.

Thanks again Jerry.

I will report back on my experience with this product I'm sure it will work as advertised.

Robert, now we just need to find someone who sells a kit that can turn this pump around :D !

thanks to everyone, Bob

There is a kit available that turns the pump around so that the impeller plate is front facing. I've seen it on the net but can't seem to find the site at the moment. The kit comes with nurled thumb screws holding the plate so that no screwdriver is necessary to remove the plate and change the impeller.

Speed seal works great. I bought one a few years ago t the Annapolis Boat Show. My standard spring commissioning includes automatically very year replacing the impeller. No need to worry about fishing pieces of it out of the engine heat exchanger.

That was me. I haven't tried it yet since it's on land untill April. Have to wait untill warms up here. Looks good and it will work.

There is an other device to turn the pump around but it sticks way too far out from the engine. I didn't like the way it looked.

You can see it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrrfGF-ps90

Mine is here. http://forums.beneteau.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=148014
So it does work!! Just remember to flip the existing impeller in the pump. So joker how does one get one of those brackets you used?. I like your idea of not having to add the extra spacer and pulling to front of engine.

The bracket can be obtained from any Yanmar Distributor and the part number is located in my original post.

Joker, thanks for the information, I like your setup, I am going to look into this further, I will have to see how it would work in our engine compartment.

Watching the U Tube video they only put one clamp on each hose. I would advise two
