Raw water intake flow direction?

While replacing my thru hull and valve decided to replace raw water strainer too . When I look at my old one the the flow arrow on the strainer is facing in the wrong direction. Is it supposed to be this way for some reason I'm unaware of?

Hello Chris,
My thought is that someone put it in backwards if the water is coming FROM that shut off valve. If you are changing several things be sure to install the new parts according to the manufacturers' sets of instructions. Also, that small, plastic filter was probably intended for something other than engine cooling water (just in case that is the water you are filtering). Maybe it would be OK for an air conditioned or filtering water for flushing the head???? I would much rather see a Groco bronze filter or similar brand/construction filter for raw water going to the engine. At any rate it is of pretty flimsy construction for something that is probably below the waterling of your boat.

On my strainers, with the right flow direction, the water flows into the middle of the strainer tube, flows through the mesh, up and out. If you have it reversed, your stainer capacity is big time reduced.
Otherwise no biggie.
