Next weekend I'm going to tackle changing the raw water impellor on my 2GM Yanmar. Any tips for a novice? Things to watch for or a step by step procedure would be apprciated. Thanks

Pretty easy

Just take a good look at the old one as you take it out, and make sure you put the new one in with the vanes going the right way. Put a bowl or something underneath to catch the small amount of water that will run out.

New screws

The screws that hold the plate to the back of the pump housing are brass or bronze - either way, the heads have a tendency to break off. Easy to remove the body of the screw but I would suggest having (I think it takes 6) new screws ready to use. There is also a gasket that should be replaced. And like Gene mentioned, be sure the vanes are intalled in the proper direction. It can be difficult to get them all in the hole in the right direction. I found that using a plastic tie wrap to hold the vanes in place to get them started into the housing was helpful. Doug s/v Brenda Gail

Screw replacements

Yanmar now uses the same screw threads, but the heads are now hex bolts. Previously, they were phillips heads and the brass would strip very easy when tightening/loosening. I bought the hex heads and feel more confident using them.
