I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I just figured out how to download and use Raster Charts from the NOAA web page. I found a piece of free software and downloaded it into my laptop. Going through the web site that I used to find the charts I then downloaded 127 charts, for free, to my lap top. The detail is as good as my paper charts on my boat but it is cool to see them this way. You can actually zoom up in some areas that are cluttered on my paper charts. The zoom is pretty clear. I am trying to post the link on where I found the free software and charts.

Legal?

Do these charts meet the requirements to be legal in Canada or the USA, I mean if that was all you had on board - no paper.

Charts Legal?

This is from the NOAA free charts website. The NOAA RNCs™ are intended for navigational use. They may be used to meet federal chart carriage regulations published in the Code of Federal Regulations. On November 15, 2005, the regulations were as stated below. These regulations may change, and mariners are advised to check the Code of Federal Regulations for their current status.

Keep the paper...

charts on board just in case. You may run into a situation where you will need the paper chart. I think one can also get raster charts from Maptech for free. I had a link but misplaced it.

Sea Clear

Hello, I have been playing with SeaClear software, which is similar to the Maptech software, but has the advantage of reading data from a GPS and showing the boat position on the screen. Since my boat has been on the hard since November, I haven't tested the program on the water, but it is very cool to play with. It uses the same charts as the maptech program. Barry

Download then print...

The same data that is collected and used by NOAA to create the RNC and ENC charts is pretty much the same data that is used by the providers of the commercial electronic charts. The RNC downloads are identical to the paper charts that you would buy. NOAA requests that you if you print them you add on a line "Not for Navigational Use" which I believe is just to cover liability issues. With the right software and a large plotter, you can print your own paper charts. Are there any similar sites that provide raster or vector based charts for Mexico and Canada? For the same price...
