First, Head Mistres Peggy should know her reputation for all things marine plumbing proceeds her!! I asked two sailors for some advice and both directed me to this forum!! I have a Raritan PH11 on a Gemini 105, I just bought it a few months ago and the manual head will not pump up and down, very difficult and it when it flushes now it looks like brownish water, maybe holding tank water?? I see several 'repair kits' at differing prices and parts, which do you advise I buy, is this diagnosed something that happens often??

Two likely possibilities

If the toilet is more than 5 years old and/or it's been at least that long since it was rebuilt, it's definitely time to do it, but that may not solve your problem. The two most likely causes for your problem are: 1. Your holding tank vent is blocked, which has pressurized the tank and is therefore creating backpressure that's pushing the flush back into the toilet. Cure: check your tank vent thru-hull and the vent fitting on the tank for a buildup of waste...scrape it out with a screw driver. 2. The Raritan PH II, unlike other manual toilets has an air valve...if it gets clogged or fails, that will produce the kind of backpressure you're experiencing. The cure: remove it and clean it or replace it. The air valve is a little flat square nut with tiny little hole in it on the front of the dry/flush valve housing....it looks like it's molded into the housing, but actually threads into it. Wrap the threads in teflon tape before you put it back. As for which rebuild kit..if your toilet was built before 6/92, you need kit # PHRKII. If was built after 6/92, you need kit # PHRKIIC. Question #6 on the PH II FAQ page of the Raritan website will help you figure out which one you have: http://www.raritaneng.com/information/faq_topics/faq_ph_II.html#a6 If was made before 1982, it's a PH, not a PH II...in which case, you need kit # PHRK. If it IS a PH, the dry/flush knob will be metal...it's plastic on the PH II. The manuals for both version of the PH II and the original PH can be downloaded from the Raritan website: http://www.raritaneng.com/information/faq_topics/faq_ph_II.html#a6 If all else fails, call Vic Willman at Raritan: 800-352-5630 x 6. There isn't anything he can't answer about the PH II. You may find the link below useful in learning how to use and maintain your toilet and holding tank.
