Range on a full tank?

Hi all, just a quicky. I recently decided to add some fuel and discovered a "dipstick" in the top of the fuel tank. You need to unscrew it and it just floats up! It does not really give me much of an idea of contents - just that there is "some". How do people decide when the tank is full? Fill, until it overflows? Has anyone calculated what sort of average range (hours / nm) a full tank will give me? Its a standard tank in the keel and the engine is an MD6A with combi.

Thanks
John

I discovered on my vega, the first time i went to fill up the tank, that the neck pipe that goes from the fill cap to the tank had a small leak in it. It was very old. So I never would fill it passed the actual plastic tank.

After that, i used diesel cans to fill it, so i knew how much was going in. You might use a flashlight too to see how much is filled.

As far as fuel consumption, you can go to the yahoo vega page and search old posts, as there are a bunch of comments on the MD6A fuel consumption rate. I forget the actual numbers.

Thanks Steve, I was told I have an 8 gallon tank (?) so I guess that
gives me a range of about nearly 200 miles to dry tanks?

Navik being fitted today... brackets were too short so friendly local
welder has extended them!

Quay sails emailed me to say the new sails are ready so things are
looking up!

I used to keep fairly accurate records of consumption when I had my Volvo MD6 with a keel tank and I reckon consumption was nearer 1.3 litres per hour, also with the keel tank you needed a lift pump to pick up the lower third of the tank.

Thanks Michael - I forgot about the lift pump - will order one
tomorrow.. can you remember how to wire it up? I guess it comes on
when the ignition is on - or should I have a separate switch?

John - There is a terminal on the ignition switch for items that come on when ignition is on. It's a long while since I used a volvo but I think it was a brown wire to top of ignition switch, looking at the handbook I think the terminal used was labelled '50' . The negative goes to any suitable pick up point. The lift pump was located at the rear of the engine because that's where the fuel line came up from the tank. It was fitted on a bracket attached to divider between engine comaprtment and port locker.
