Raising the pop top

I've been trying to raise the pop top on my 84 C22 with little success. I have actually raised it I guess, but it won't stay in play in the up position. What am I doing wrong? At first I thought it was just the boom vang in the way, so I disconnected it from the mast, but the pop top still just falls back down. The only other thing I can think of is that the mast isn't adjusted correctly and should lean more forward. Any other ideas?

Pop Top Mast Lock

The pop top will not stay up by itself. There is a "catch" that slides in the mast track that the pop top slips into. The C22 handbook calls it the "pop top mast lock" and you need one. I suggest Catalina Direct (www.catalinadirect.com) as they carry lots of C22 parts. They also sell a kit that makes the pop top a lot easier to raise.

Your not alone

I did the same thing when I bought mine. Then someone walked up and showed me the hook that slides up and locks it into place.

Sail stop can be used too

A sail stop, which is a small cylinder placed into the sail groove on the mast with a large screw on knob (nut?), can be used in place of the pop top mast lock; however, it is not as secure. I use a sail stop myself, but that is due to placement of my boomkicker, which is too high to allow room for the pop top mast lock go below the pop top as the pop top is positioned against the mast.
