I would appreciate it if someone could help with the precise steps they take when raising the mast on the 240. I saw the dealer raise it and it took him 20 minutes, and now I am having trouble. I must be doing something wrong. You can e-mail me at mnays@go.com Thanks, a discouraged....Michael

Checklist In Archives

Late last year someone I think his name was Jack posted a checklist to raise and lower the mast. That and practice should help.

Don't be discouraged!

Remember that your dealer is an expert, who has done this many times, so he will make it look easy. If you typically trailer your boat, this process will become routine. I keep my H260 in a marina, so I get to step the mast and lower it only once a year. If the mast-raising goes wrong, it can cause some expensive and possibly painful results. One thing I found with my H260 is, with a roller-furling jib, there is more weight to deal with, so I have to use a winch. This means that I am in the cockpit while this is all happening. Not the safest place to be. Keep an eye on the mast-raising pole (it is not made of the strongest material) and look out for the inevitable snags as things go up. SO: Take your time, go slowly and make safety a first priority. If you have any questions or problems, call your dealer or Hunter. They WILL help you. I have stood on the cabin top with my cell phone in one hand and a bent mast-raising pole in the other and my dealer was there to help me! Ralph C. Regar S/V Shambala

WINDEX!

Don't forget to put the windex on before raising the mast. Re-stepping the mast to put the Windex on always makes my time a little longer. There are some grins out there from people who won't admit to this. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Mast Raising gets easier

I have a new H240 and I find that after about 4 attempts I can get the mast up and the boom on in about 20 mins. The part I find most irritating is attaching the bloody ring-dings on the mast base pin and the forestay. My fingers don't do ring-dings well. Does anyone use shackles for the forestay? The dealer I bought from pointed out that it's easy to bend the turnbuckles on the shrouds when raising the mast. I tied a line from each turnbuckle to the lifeline to keep the facing up during mast raising. Otherwise you have to remember to pull them up. I've also managed to lose all the hardware attached to the mast - windex, mast pin, vang buckle, sail stop. Take the windex off before you trailer!

Ring-dings

Instead of ring-dings in my mast step pins, I use those clips that look a lot like safety pins (but cost more because they are marine stuff). Much quicker than ring-dings.

Mast raising

Michael You have already gotten several useful responses to your post. One trick we learned is not to wrestle getting the pin inserted after the mast is upright until we lossen one of the nuts at the base of the solid-pole "shrouds" that support the mast. This gives the mast more play so it is easy to get the pin in. We then reattach the bolt. OF course our ultimate solution has been to get a slip and only raise and lower the mast when we go on a trip! Good sailing. Bill Welsch s/v Renewal St. Louis
