I have had my 1981 C-22 in a slip since 1986. I am now considering trailoring it. Does anyone have any suggestions that will make it easier for my wife and me to raise and lower the mast?

New trailer??

I may be incorrect here, but I think that I remember something in the handout literature at the boatshow I went to last fall (Sail Annapolis) about the new trailers for Catalina 22's having some sort of special winch and winching attachment that was designed to assist in stepping the mast. I did not pay a lot of attention to it at the time since we sail a Capri 22 with a fin keel that can't be launched from a trailer, short of unhooking the trailer from my truck, and the boat from the trailer, and then pushing the boat and trailer off the dock into deep water and letting the trailer sink to the bottom while my boat floats. I will try and dig out the literature which I got at the show and see if there is anything there. I may be thhinking of another company, but maybe their trailer would work with a C-22. George

More re new trailer

Tom - Got home and pulled the sales stuff. In the promo literature for the new C22 Mark II's was the bit about a mast raising system on the trailer, which they say "The new mast raising system allows the skipper to accomplish this task singlehanded." Since they have made a point of keeping the hull and all surfaces that contact the water identical to maintain eligibility for C22 one class racing, you should be able to put your sailboat on a new triler without any problem. Good luck . . . . George

Not as bad as it looks.

Tom, Go to the web site www.trailersailor.com, and you will find an article on how to step/unstep the mast easily. Good luck. Gary

It's called "The Mast Up System"

Hi There, Yes I know the system well as this is the system that came as an option on my 2000 Mark II. This system can be purchased from Catalina in Woodland Hills, or One similar from Catalina Direct right here online www.catalinadirect.com should get you there. I know with the new boat it may have been included at a reduced price as opposed for what it is going for now. I'm not sure on that point, but I know that my wife of all of about 110 lbs can raise the mast with one hand using the mainsheet blocks and line. I'm sure you would be more than satisfied with it, and it will give you years of service and very little problem if any at all. Happy hoisting :) Dave LaPere

A-Frame

Many C-22 trailer sailors use an A-frame to help raise the mast. I made mine of 2 skinny lodgepole pines about 8 ft. long, with bolt thru top that contains a couple of strong clips that attach to end of forestay and to a section of 3/8 in line which is held. The bottoms each have a hole and a 1/4 in line that attaches where the forward shrouds connect to the deck. Removing the upper bolt allows frame to collapse for storage. There have been diagrams and photos in C-22 Association literature, which you can get a line on their website (I'm on vacation away from my resources so can't offer the address just now). My wife and I raise and lower Sylvan's mast easily with this A-frame rig.

Look at the mcgregor rising system

the mcgregor rising system uses a pole & rope hoist witch makes it very easy to rise with 2 people

Cheap and Easy

Tom I copied high tech system that i found in catalina direct with low tech idea. I took a 8 foot 2/6 and notched a U the size of the mast. I then placed a 2x6 along the bottom to make an inverted T. I set the rigging except for the fornt stay then hook a line to the front stay. I stand inthe cock pit and set the base of the mast on the plate and lift the end up and the wife place the stand under it I can then steady the mast while she grab the line on the front stay. she then pull and i walk the mast up. She then disconects the line and hooks the front stay tot he chain plate. It take very little effort from both of us, and was cheap to build. The only draw back is that it is bulky I just toss it inthe back of the truck after i launch. Good luck
