H23 Mast Stepping
Welcome to the group, Bill. Your question has been covered many times in the archives. Ward's solution and explanation is one of the best. Postings by Peter Suah in the archives will also be helpful. Finally, someone else suggested building a ramp from the transom to where the sliding top covers the companionway hatch, but I forget who to attribute it to.
