How do I raise the companionway hatch on my newly purchased 1993 23.5? The sliding plexiglass cover will not slide toward the bow sufficiently to clear the tracks and wil not slide toward the stern enough to clear the hatch.

Jammed?

In normal operation the plexiglass hatch cover would slide forward until the plexiglass clears the cover strips on the sides and where the wood lateral brace at the aft end of the cover comes against the fiberglass hatch cover. There must be something blocking full forward movement of the slider, or it is binding on the side tracks. Reaching up from the inside with a long finer and feeling inside the drain channel, you may discover the problem. Or, from inside, using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the wood cross stop that is screwed to the forward end, top side of the plexiglass cover. This should allow you to pull the sliding hatch cover toward the stern of the boat. With it completely removed, the fiberglass cover can be raised to inspect the drain channel and other parts of the sliding mechanism to discover the problem. You may find that the drain channel is filled with debris. Also, you may find that the bottom side of the plexiglass cover where it slides on the side rails has accumulated a layer of gellcoat from repeated sliding on the rails. Use fine steel wood to remove the buildup, and give the edges of the plexiglass, as well as the fiberglass rails, a good coat of wax. Hope this solves the problem.

Thanks

Thanks for the very detailed and informative response. I run out to the boat and try your suggestions tomorrow.

I had the same problem.............

I found that it isn't aligned properly and that if I ppush the glass as far forward as possible and then reach underneath and push up on the forward end of the glass it will clear the hatch, slide forward a few more inches and work fine. Hope this helps. Hayden

Another good suggestion...

Hayden's suggestion is pertinent. It has been discussed several times in this forum. Heat from the sun, or just plain age, causes the slider to sag, resulting in an inability to clear the cabin top. Yes, pushing up on the forward end of the plexiglass slider from below could be the solution to getting it to advance just enough to clear the top guides. Good idea.

Stuck....

I have the same prob... it usually can be fixed by lifting up slightly on the plexiglass window (closed position)... i hear a light pop then it slides nicely... I tried to put vasoline (sp?) on the track but that didnt seem to do anything.
