raising a C22 off trailer

Hello, I need to sand and refinish the keel on my boat (81 C22). I would like to jack the boat up off the trailer, then insert some RR Tie blocks (12" X 12" X 1 foot long) between the hull and the trailer bunks. The methods I have read about jacking state to place a jack at the stern, place a wide board, between the jack and the hull, then raise the rear of the boat. OK, I tried that, but there are two problems. The ground the trailer is parked on is not level, it slopes to starboard. When I tried to raise the boat it started to slide downhill. I think I can solve that problem with 2 jacks, one under stern on the starboard, the other on the port side. The second problem is the stern of the boat is about 4' in the air. What do you suggest to use between the jack and boat, or the jack and the ground? I used some more RR Tie, but I don't have enough for two jacks. Is a single 2 X 4 X 3' stong enough and secure enough, or will the boat fall off? My goals when jacking the boat up are 1. no one gets hurt 2. the boat doesn't get damaged 3. the boat is secure enough to work on 4. I can get the boat back down onto the trailer when done. Finally, should I even bother doing this repair? How much would a boat yard charge to do the job? The keel is not in bad condition. It has a few small rust spots and a few areas where the paint is peeling. Since I plan on leaving the boat in salt water at a mooring I want the keel refinished and painted. Comments / suggestions? PS I tried searching, but got no hits. Thanks, Barry

Why not use the trailer jack? Just let it all the way down (raising the stern) add your support system raise the jack boat rest on supports. block front of trailer raise jack build up under jack raise again support bow of boat let trailer down and pull trailer out. boat on stands. reverse to load boat on trailer. Hope this helps. Ken

Hey Barry

Is your boat a swing, wing, or fin keel? I did mine (swing) and used more brain than muscle, a safe combination. I don't really understand the method described by Kevin, mainly because I couldn't make it happen so I aborted. The method I settled on was easier for me.I jacked up the front, then back alternatly until it was high enough then supported the hull and lowered the trailer. Alot depends on your keel type but I was surprised how high it really needed to be. Good luck p.s.If you want pictures of this set up let me know

A few pointers . . .

If you are trying to get some additional clearance to fully expose the keel, then you should only need to lift the boat about 6" off of the bunks. I lift my boat up every year to do something. I put a couple layers of 2 x 8 boards accross areas of the trailer frame and lift with a 1 foot square pad using a hydralic jack. Then I put some 2 x 6 blocks under the bunks and lower it back down on them. The boat/trailer needs to be on reasonably level ground. Otherwise, you will run into trouble no matter what. It sounds like you have been trying to lift the boat from the ground. This is really complicated, and as you experienced, the trailer will tend to move once the boat is lifted. Also note that the boat should only be lifted in certain areas where the hull is strong. These are generally at areas where the interior boat structure joins the hull (like at bulkheads). My web page (link below) has some additional pointers - BE SAFE. Regards, Ted

I've never tried it but

I am planning to do some keel work this spring. My plan is to build 2 small ramps (stacked up 2x6 board) and pull the trailer up the ramps, effectively raising the boat and trailer. At this point I will place the supports under the hull and back the trailer down the ramps. I expect that the ramps will need to be some what steep so that the trailer will drop down before it pushes the boat back.

raising c22 off trailer

catalina direct has a video that tells you how to do this safely. they also show how to get the keel out of the boat and refinish it. and of course put it back. ken

Raising C22 above trailer

I've read that if you are jacking from the ground, that you can tie the trailer springs with a stout line so that they don't let the bunks rise as you lift the boat. Also have read where some tie styrofoam blocks on the trailer bunks while the boat is in water, then float the boat onto them so that boat is above bunks a bit (wouldnt want to trailer far). Havn't tried either yet, but both sound reasonable to me. Whatever, the boat is heavy so be very careful. Dick

A Little At A Time

Amigo, Go a little at a time and make sure your boat is on level ground. This isn't a small object you're jacking up. Get the video from Catalina Direct, it has step by step guidelines for lifting a vessel of this size. Jacking up the trailor is hare brained at best. The springs will keep going up until the boat is way too high. Use your brain and live to sail a boat that isn't busted up in your drive way amigo,
