I bought a mid priced round BBQ a few years ago. It has a single burner and a valve to screw in a small Propane tank. The burner now has hot spots and uneven heat so I suspect it's rusted out and needs replacing. I discovered that the round style and lid were more of a pain than the typical rectangular shapes. So my question is what are some good BBQ's that are reasonably priced, last more than a couple of years and are convenient to use. I usually only cook for 2 so don't need anything too large. Thanks for the input.

are mounts available for non-marine grills?

Irish -

Can't beat that! Are rail mounting brackets readily available? How did you mount it on your boat?

I bought a Magma "Newport" from Masons Chandlry, now on our 4th season and use it almost every dinner, every weekend and a couple of week-long trips per season.

This is dinner in paradise, Hope Island, Southern Georgian Bay.

Had a similar grill for my last boat...

Except mine was cast aluminum, which--unlike stainless steel lasts forever...a coat of Rustoleum every couple of years makes it looks brand new again. Installed two 1" flagpole mounts in the gunwhale (transom on my boat, but you can do it on either side) for the front feet to sit in..cantelevering the grill over the water where it belongs.

Best thing about "household" grills is, replacement parts are cheap and available from any hardware store.

Everybody seems to like the Magma these days... I've had the Force 10 units (the cylindrical ones) but they don't give a very even heat. I REALLY like my Dickinson: lots of heat even with a disposable propane cannister (the Force10 pretty much required a 5-lb tank), even heat, good solid SS with wood handles, plenty of options for mounting... Oh and the new ones have a temp gauge as well.

Ordered and received the Stanport Grill. The grill was what I expected for a 45.00 unit. It is constructed ok. During assembly I noticed it did not come with a retaining clip that holds the regulator to the burner. After repeated attempts to get in contact with the grill manufacture I was informed they have no parts for the grill and that it is made in China. The absolute worst customer service I have ever receive. If you purchase this product do not expect any help if something is wrong. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

I bought the grill for my boyfriend for our anniversary. I had ordered it a month before our special day, so it was hiding in the closet for a while. I didn't bother to open it to check, which was a big mistake. So the special day came and we sat down and he opened the box, the outside box was fine, but the box for the actual grill was dented. When we pulled the grill out, we noticed that the grill was dented as well, and it was missing a nut to screw the propane pipe. I had contacted the company and they never emailed me back. And the only message I received was that Amazon was reviewing the case.

Yes this grill was less expensive than many out there, so I couldn't possibly expect this to be the best out there. However, I was camping in cold rainy weather this weekend. I was grilling some burgers on high, when all of a sudden flames shot out from the closed lid as if it was going to blow up. There were flames also coming out from the bottom hole and lighting my wood table on fire. When investigating what to do, the adjustable lever you tell how high you want it was frozen with ice. The only way to turn this off was to pull the propane off. I restarted thinking this was some fluke...however it started to ice the lever again. Def to cheap to use. The product is dangerous. My husband had it burning out in the driveway and the flame started climbing and climbing--he could not turn it off. He eventually had to kick off the gas cylinder or it would have exploded. It also claims that you can you can use the larger tank--well, you can't! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

The grill started fine, but after running for a short time, the flames got much higher. The gas regulator in the temperature control was malfunctioning. I felt the valve and it was ice cold. Apparently this regulator freezes and sticks. Turning it off had no effect. I unscrewed the gas bottle to stop it. Not a smart thing to do, but nothing else worked. I notice the Weber "Go Anywhere" has a similar valve, so I ordered one on ebay for around 20 bucks shipping included and will try that. The grill is constructed OK, stainless lasts a long time. Hope this works. It's Chinese, so. no hope of money back. Strongly advise not buying it. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

The grill is ok in a pinch. It does not have a grease pan to catch drippings, therefore can only be used where such drips are not problematic. I thought I could use it on my boat. No way!Grease on the deck of a boat can be disasterous. It is best used for camping, were you can set it on the ground. The maker should add a grease pan and mounting bracket to the bottom of the unit, and compete with marine units costing 350 percent more. They would sell like hot cakes. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

The newer Magma Kettles are much better. They now have hinged tops make life easier too. I like them because they are easier to store.

There are some other brands that you may also want to check out. See the archives.

"...I thought I could use it on my boat. No way!Grease on the deck of a boat can be disasterous..."

Yes it can...but that's true of ANY grill if not mounted to hang outside the boat over the water! ONLY use a grill mounted on a rail, gunwale or transom, overhanging the water! NeverNeverNEVER use a grill in the cockpit, or worse yet, inside the cabin ..a wake can tip it over and send flaming grease all over the boat!

People who set a tabletop grill up in the cockpit of any boat are just asking for a disaster...and if it happens your insurance company won't be too impressed with your attention to safety either...

And btw...

Never store propane cylinders below decks or in bilges, lockers orlazarettes...hang 'em from rails or lifelines in "slings" you can buy that are made specifically for that purpose. However, even if your sewing skills are so limited that you can barely sew on a button, you can make the slings for a fraction of the price to buy 'em.

trousers that have worn through the knees have very good potential for making the lower portion into bags. just stitch a seam across one end and sew a strap to the other end.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
After my grill has cooled I store the propane bottle in it. I put the cover over the grill and never had a problem. It is a safe way to store the propane canister and I don't have a sling hanging anywhere on the stern rail that has propane in it.

Another storage place in the boat is the anchor locker (if it drains outside of the boat and not into the bilge). I keep the spare gas for my dinghy outboard there.

I have the standard magma grill. It works fine and I use it most of the time on the boat when I stay overnight. You can find a used one on ebay.

I have used the Magma propane for at least 10 years. It tends to burn hot, but you learn how to compensate. I have used charcoal in the past, but this is far better.

I'm sorry, but for some reason that made me laugh.

On a slightly different tack, I was applying for boat insurance and the BoatUS guy asked, amongst other things, if I had an over the rail BBQ. So I'm wondering, do those things bump up the rate?

I have a 10hp outboard on my O'Day 25. So naturally I have a gasoline tank in the fuel locker. Is anyone ever concerned about having a grill on the stern rail with gasoline so close?
