Radio Noise

We have been trying to find an intermittent radio squeel since our boat was new. It seems that it is present when the refrigeration system is running and absent when the system is shut down. Is there any information or suggestions that you can provide? Mike DiMario s/v Serenity H376

Some ideas

Try to determine if the interference is coming through the antenna, or through the radio's 12 V line connections. Some possible ways: (1) If you notice the same problem when listening on a HT, then its thru the air. (2) Connect a different 12 V source to the radio. If the problem goes away, then its thru the regular 12 V line connection If it is through the air (and coming in via the antenna connection), the problem is with the refrigerator which is emitting spurious RF. You can contact the manufacturer for ideas. This is difficult to resolve and often hit & miss. If it is through the 12V line, you can try a "line filter" which is a ferrite core thru which you wrap the 12 V wires thru. This will attenuate the spurious signals present on the line - Radio Shack & others have such devices. R. Young Hunter 37 - Destiny

With Charger

We get radio noise when the charger is on. Can that be solved with the line filter? Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Further on R. Young

One quick way to find out if the problem is external (off the air) is to remove the antenna lead... if the interference goes away when you remove the antenne lead, the the problem is external (coming from a external source such as a refrigerator, power inverter(a deveice to convert 12V DV to 110 AC , etc.) , if not, the it is probably through the power lead. One thing you might want to check are power inverters. They are notorious for emitting RF interference. The problem may sometimes be eliminated by replacing the inverter with another "brand" of the same required wattage. Good luck Chris

Re Radio Noise w/charger

The line filter is one method to try, but not a guarantee, so I cannot say. If The noise is coming via the antenna, a line filter will not help, it only works to remove variations in voltage coming thru the power (12V) connection that result in radio noise/squeal etc. Tracking down these types of problems, unfortunatly, is difficult & often hit & miss (any Ham radio operator can verify this). R.F. NOISE

THE R.F. NOISE IS MOST LIKELY BEING GENERATED BY THE CONTROL MODULE, THIS MODULE IS ALSO USED BY ALL THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS THAT ARE USING THE DANFOSS COMPRESSOR. WE AND DANFOSS ARE WORKING ON A FIX WE HAVE NOT COME UP WITH A FIX THAT WORKS EVERY TIME. THERE ARE TOO MANY FACTORS INVOLVED SO THAT EACH BOAT BECOMES UNIQUE. SOME FIXES ARE SHIELDING THE CONTROL MODULE AND GROUNDING IT, SHIELDING POWER IN, THE LOCATION AND TYPE OF ANTENNA HAS BEEN A FACTOR. IF YOU FIND ANY OF THESE FIXES TO WORK LET US KNOW GOOD LUCK
