I am relatively sure you need a license for a vhf radio, does anyone knowwhere to apply and can you do it online?

No license needed

Bob, you only need a license to transmit on a vhf channel. You won't need one to use a vhf radio.

VHF, question

Ok, I just read the FCC rules, how do I get a call sign then, is it just the boat name?

vhf radio

Bob, you do not need a license to use a vhf marine radio in the US-you will need a station license and an operators license to go to Canada and other foreign countries. Your call sign is just your boat name. Be sure to use the correct vhf channels, and just use ch 9 and 16 to contact or hail for help-then switch to a ship to ship talk channel. Above all, be courteous and remember that the channels are shared. If you get a DSC equipped radio, you should register it and get a DSC number-that will eventually help identify you in an emergency. It's free at the boatus website
