RADAR

I currently have 2006 Hunter 33 with Raymarine ST 60 gauges and C-80 chart plotter. I am looking to add radar for next year trip around Maine coast. Travel down from Lake Champlain then up! Where to place the dome. Most people put it on the mast above first spreader to the height of one length of cable. ( Cable expensive so they do not go higher). I am now being told I should consider a stern pole mount for the radar. That is not as high as mast. So I assume less range coverage. There are complaints about the dome being hit by fore sails when on mast. If I go for a pole on stern, are there telescoping poles so that I could lower it when going under bridges on canals like Champlain canal ( 13 ft clearance)? Or am I better to put on mast. Any input appreciated.

I have the same setup you are discussing. My radome is up on the mast. Only once or twice in the past four seasons have I really hung up the jib, and never my spinnaker. Same as Nick said - only in light air. With the arch already in the cockpit and the dinghy motor on the rail I did not want one more piece of equipment such as another pole in the area. So for me the mast made the most sense. Andy
