I want to install a post for my radar. This post will have a retractable arm that will have a pulley system to help me lift and place my kicker on the dinghy. (after all I am getting older) I have seen a similar post installed on other 34's. I would like to put it on the port side of the stern rail. I envision it going through the deck and then bolted to the surface close to the rear water tank fill hole in the lazerette. My question is this. How close does the water tank come to that surface? Do I stand a chance of drilling into the tank if I secure this post? Is there someplace that I can view the tank and how it is installed? Any help would be appreciated before I do something that will require other fixes. Thanks.

I made my own radar tower a couple of years ago and used the Garhauer tower as my model. Like Ed said, the bottom bracket mounts to the transom. I actually bought my support struts from Garhauer and the thing is rock solid. Unless you have major obstacles in the way and can't do a bolt on application, I'd stay away from going through the fiberglass deck.
Look at the link (Radar Tower Accessories) and you'll see the mounting struts you can use.

The Garhauer pole is great and should work fine-but use the transom mount instead of going thru the deck. We've got their pole on our 356 with the optional engine hoist and it works really well, very well designed and sturdy. The engine hoist is removable if you want to stow it.

Dutchy:

Take a few pic's of your stern & rail. Send them off to Garhauer and speak with their project manager (Mike). They can/will do anything to make a proper setup for your boat. I agree that the transom mount is the way to go. I think it would also be better to have the hoist farther outboard for the engine hoist.

Only stern picture that I could find. You really cannot see the rail support very well. Nor the fact that you could add a second one to the lower pushpit rail. Pic is in the Erie Canal on the way to FL with Mike A. at the helm.

Garhauer is the only way to go. I installed one this past summer on my 40.5 and it is a great value. I purchased it at the Annapolis Boat show and it included all hardware and with the engine hoist it's great.
