i am about to buy a chartplotter, but am undecided between the garmin 2010c and 3010c. the main difference is that the 3010 is radar adaptable but the cost difference is almost half a complete radar system which would add redundancy. any thoughts out there?

Get the new generation chartpoltter from Garmin and you will be able to get weather (doppler generated) information if you subscribe to XM radio. If you wnat to have a radar for collision avoidance then get a radar antenna. I decide to go with raymarine C and a couple of days later the announcement was made that the 3010 was available which included the option to add a radr antenna. After using both I like the Garmin better. The procesor could refresh the page without going blank first. http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap3010c/ 46

Radar
It depends in large part, on where you plan to go. Although either can give you a good position fix, think of them as serving different purposes, not reduntant purposes. Of the two, only one can tell you if/when/where/how fast storms are coming; only one can tell you how fast and on what course our fellow powerboaters are aiming towards; only one can tell you the position of other velssels. You might be better served to get a radar compatible plotter now to which you could easily add radar after gaining some experience. Don Illusion

Mortyd, While I have no info about your personal needs or boating plans, I would not pay for any capability that you don't intend to use immediately. The technology is changing so rapidly that anything you buy today will be "yesterday's news" tomorrow. Have you looked at the Raymarine "C Series"? All sizes have radar capability out of the box and the prices are competitive. Add a radar antenna or fishfinder transponder when you are ready. If you have problem with RM C-MapNT mapping/software from the past, you may like the new Navionics Gold charts provided with the C Series displays Jon McClain

JRC Radar
WMJmarine is selling the JRC 1800 color radar chart plotter for only 1499.00. Down side is size, only 6.5 inch screen. Put one on our 336 last year, and wouldn't cruise without it.

if getting a Radar - also budget for ...
... a/some radar reflector(s) and an automatic fog horn. While the hand-held fog horns are legal I've never seen anyone use one properly in accordance with the regulations hence the recommendation for an automatic one. Runing around in zero visability with radar on your boat doesn't help others to know you exist. If you hit someone or get T-boned and you're not legal it things could get messy.
