I have been sold on the idea of installing RADAR on my new 326 - (on order)- by input from the HOW forum repies. Ok, where should I mount it? No back stays, so on the mast? If so how does its aspect ration to the water effect it's accuracy when the boat is heeling? Any input on mounting and type of unit (cost?) would be appreciated. Thanks Ed

Radar Mount

Ed, Mount it on the mast. We used a Raytheon standard mount and it worked just fine. The heel of the boat does not seem to have any material effect on the use off the radar. We did use a guard around the radar, which added a little cost. Not sure it was really necessary, but easier to do while the mast was down. Ours is on a 290, would think the 326 would carry it even better. I'm having a little trouble remembering the cost ($3,500?), but that is easy enough to determine from many sources. Ours included the chartplotter and is color. I think you can get basic radar for under $1500. I think they charged us about $300 to install the radome and wire to the nav station. We did all the rest of the installation. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

Arch Mount?

I have a 320, and thought that if I put radar on I could mount it off the arch on an angle a little to the stern. I mounted my GPS antenna on the after angle of the traveler blcok mounting, and it works just fine and is out of the way. The only bad part is drilling holes through the stainless. The wires have plenty of room running through the arch tubing.

mast mount.

We mounted ours on our 33.5 on an Edson mast off the stern of the boat. The wiring for this mount was easier than trying to run it from the mast. Works great! Feel free to come look at my installation if you want. I'm at Spicer's, F22.

Radar mount?

I sail a H37C and this summer I did a round trip to Bermuda and had the Radar on all the time. One of the times I really needed it , the wind was really blowing and we had a bit of heel. My dome is mounted on the mast at the spreaders and it works great in fog when you are motorsailing but when we heeled I lost a lot of detail to windward and was not able to see the size, shape or direcrtion of squalls/rain as we were sailing. I believe its more important to be able to level the dome than to have it 15' up the mast.
