My fuel water separator has a metal bowl without a built-in vent valve. Is it possible to add a brass valve in place of that plug that I would have otherwise remove each time.

Also, is it necessary to bleed it when draining the bowl or is that something you only do when changing out the filter?

Two Options ......................

......................... if the filter is a Racor 110A.

The easiest option is to use the alternate filter outlet as an air vent. It's downstream of the filter element but air shouldn't have a problem in passing the media and then out a vent fitting. In the photo below, I've used the other filter outlet for a vacuum sensor but it can also be used for an air vent. The outlet is a 1/4" NPT female connection so any hardware store should be able to supply suitable brass fittings and a 1/4" ball valve for the air release.

The other alternative would be to find a fitting with a 3/8'-24 thread to tap into the existing air vent and from there to NPT fittings. This could be a real challenge.
