Racor SNAPP fuel filter...

I presently have a Racor 200 series spin on fuel filter. The plunger leaks. Racor says replace the entire unit. I like the ease of service of the SNAPP plus no plunger to leak. Racor however said the SNAPP may not be approved for use on inboard engine because it is plastic (so is the bowl on my present filter). Anybody using the SNAPP filter? My filter is not in the engine compartment. It is under the aft bunk.
Thanks for any comments.

I do, but you know that already.

This has nothing to do with the inboard engine; rather, with location of the filter in the proximity of the engine. Possibly, you could install the filter further back.

I know for the 500 and bigger Racor filters Parker sells a metal shield that earns this filter a CG approval. My understanding is the shield design is to slow the impact of a fire on the plastic parts of the filter. Not sure how effect it would be but it is the difference in CG aprovedbor not.

I just had a look at that Snapp. Seems like a real ecological nightmare; more plastic in the land fills. Why not just get a 500? Top loading, no muss, no fuss.

At almost $40 a pop for a replacement Snapp filter I think the Racor 500 is a better deal. I can get the replacement elements for around$10. Besides that in case of an emergency where the filter clogs and you may have run out of a replacement you could remove the clogged element and run with no filter relying just on the secondary (been there while having two spares). With the Snapp a lack of replacement would mean dead in the water. These diesel engines can digest a fair amount of water content in the fuel, beyond what can saturate a Racor filter element.

Nah... the 500 is way too big, plus it has a dreaded plunger (they leak). Snapp definitely seems the way to go for my little boat. Just keep a spare on hand, and forget about it. Thanks all.

"Plunger"? Are you referring to the T handle on top? Every filter for the 500 comes with a new o-ring for the T handle AND for the filter housing. If you are having leaks in a Racor 500, it is operator error, NOT the design of the filter.
If it's the cost that has you double thinking the 500, I'm sure one can be had for a reasonable cost at any used marine chandler.

Capta,
I don't have a 500. I am looking to replace the leaky 215 I have. After Marek's suggestion I looked into the SNAPP. In talking with racor, it is obvious this is the one for me. Thanks for your input.
