racor fuel filter

Bought my '87 Cat 34 not too long ago and have decided it's time to change the primary fuel filter (racor).The engine is a Universal 25XP. It has been running fine with the present filter which removes particles down to "30" size. Filters are available down to "2" size (much smaller). Logic tells me smaller is better. I tell me stick with what's working fine. Racor said the latter. Opinions?Also, the secondary fuel filter appears to be next to impossible to get to withour taking the engine apart. Any thoughts?

Fuel Filter

First of all, the Racor unit is most likely a fuel / water separator. Mine is located under the head sink. The filter on the engine is the actual fuel filter and I have had no problem getting it changed using a small filter wrench. Be sure to prime both new filters before installing them.Finally, in over 25 years of sailing, I've never had an engine problem caused by factory installed fuel filters.Regards,Paul _/)

Smaller is better !

Bob; We're into our second season with our 1987 '34. We had 2 gallons of water in the fuel tank when we bought her. The bottom line for any diesel...2 micron filter/seperator,along with the original filter; and change the oil often. I'm told that they'll last forever this way.

Go First Class

If you are going ahead to put in the Racor (good idea, by the way) you might consider a dual arrangement that lets you change one filter while running on the other one. If you travel to Mexico or get fuel contamination due to bacterial growth, it really makes it easier and safer to have a dual system.
