Racor Fuel Filter Housing Seal

I just changed the Racor fuel filter element on my 336 this weekend. When I unscrewed the lower metal housing that holds the filter, I noticed the brown coating on the edge that meets the rubber sea inside of the top assembly had chipped so I now have a part brown coating/part metal surface to seal against the rubber. I chipped the rest of the brown coating away and ran the sealing metal edge across some very fine sandpaper to smooth it out. Everything went back together with no leaks but I later starting thinking that maby the brown coating could have been there to make a better and smoother sealing surface against the rubber seal. Has anybody had this situation before? Please advise.

James,

Since it doesnt leak, then the rubber does conform to the surface and you are good to go. Never seen an oil filter mating surface that needed a powder coatiing to make the rubber gasket seat properly.

James...

when I found my filter canister on my 3GM30 not sealing tightly after a filter change and leaking ever so slightly, I determined that it may have been due to the thin diameter O-ring. I took a spare canister to the local home center and fitted a thicker diameter O-ring to the opening, nestled against the flange. Bought two, installed one and haven't had a leak since.
