I have 2002 356 Racor filter R20pul, which is difficult to replace. I am thinking of replacing with different racor setup with see thru bowl and pimer pump, any thoughts on this and is the pump neccasary? John 356 S/V Alcyone

356 racor

Hi John, the pump is really useful when you need to reprime after changing the filter. that said, I'm not sure if anyone has a better solution. We have 2 of the racors in parallel with a 2-way valve so we can switch quickly if one becomes clogged. you can buy the clear bowl separately, around $20, so you can see water/crud. to change the filter, put an absorbant mat in the bottom of the compartment and a plastic bag around the filter-remove it and replace with a filter that you've mostly filled with diesel. use the pump and bleeder to get the filter primed.

R20PUL

John I have a 356 and found it difficult to find the R20PUL cartridge. I found out that the only difference between the R20P and the R20PUL was the UL certification that is necessary for commercial vessels. The R20P is much easier to find. I would like to get to a clear bowl installation as well but not sure it is worth the effort as in 3 years we have not had a water problem (knock on wood). I change the filters every other year as I only use about 30 to 40 gallons aof fuel each season.
