I have a Racor 110A filter as the first stop off the fuel tank, mounted in the engine compartment. To change the filter element, is it necessary to take apart the back panel in the aft cabin to get to the fuel tank shut-off, or can it be changed without doing this and not have fuel pour into the boat?

Turn off the fuel

My 306 back pannel is easy to get open, but you have to do a headstand to get the filter out. When you replace the filter remember to fill it with fuel so that you don't get air in the fuel line.

Fuel will spill - Richard's right

I let a real technician change the fuel filter last year, just to see it done "right" and I watched as he attempted to without shutting off the fuel. He quickly pulled out the incoming hose and plugged it with something...but not before spilling fuel in the engine area. Not worth the smell and clean up. In an earlier post, I had mentioned installing an access panel in the rear; short of that, definitely unscrew the six screws, pull out the panel and shut the fuel off before changing the filter. The technician also removed the entire filter assembly from its place behind the engine (i.e. removed the whole works), and made the filter change. Then re-attached the whole works back in place. Couldn't see him doing any headstands.

fuel shut off

Gregg if it is inconient to get to the shut off valve in you boat let me suggest that next time you change the filter install a shut off valve at the filter. this way the valve is easy to get at and you won't be temped to skip that step of the job.
