We have "skill challenges" once a month at our club. I have had a varying degree of success with my 37c "Kalaukia". One of the (many) good things about Hawaii is 365 days a year sailing weather. My best point of sail is beam reach, thanks to the staysail. I recently put a 135% jib on and have improved pointing into the wind greatly - in fact I can point with the best (15 kts of wind or better). The key to pointing is watching the tell tales very closely and (almost) anticipating the wind shifts. The tell tales will forwarn you of a pending shift before you actually see or feel it.

Love Hawaii

You are right about the tell tails. They do show alot about what is going on. But the set of the sail can have a profound impact on your pointing ability. I have marked my jib sheets with a "Perm magic marker" at the "Hard in" position, now I can make fine adjustments and tack more consistantly to windward. Another trick is to make tacking marks on your cabin top. These are pieces of electrical tape placed at 45 deg angles from the bow (front) pointing back into the center of your cockpit. These are used to sight windward marks or boats to determine if you are on the lifted tack. If the mark is between the tape stripe and bow, you are on the lifted tack, if the mark if outside of your 45 deg tape mark you are goofing off and not sailing the shortest course to the windward mark. This works really well in shifty lake wind that we race in. I use to travel out to Hawaii all the time when I lived in California. I do miss that great weather and beautifull island. Its 30 deg and windy here today. Want to trade????? Scott

Scott lied :)

This post caught my eye because I sail an H37C. In fact, not far from Scott on Lake Erie. But it is snowing there and 23 degrees. I just got off the phone with the marina Scott. :) You are a lucky man Charlie.

Sorry Scott!

Your post has a Catawba Yacht Club address. We also have a Catawba yacht club. it's on Catawba island near where I sail(on Lake Erie). Forgive me, my mistake. And I am jealous, your yacht club is probably not iced in. And we know Charlie's is not.

Catawba Yacht Club

Ohhhh No...We have no ice, in fact we are racing this Sunday. Check out our web page at WWW.homestead.com/catawbayachtclub/ We have a great photo section with a bunch of pic's. No problem with the post, I knew you didn't mean me, just wanted to rib you some for it. I feel sorry for you guys up north that can't sail all year. We only race fall, winter, and spring. Summer time in NC/SC is way to hot and little wind. If you are ever in the Charlotte NC area look me up... Scott Davis H23 "No Alibi"
