I was wondering if any of you racers could answer this.I pull my main to the very top of the mast thinking of getting the most air,but now I wonder if this is a good idea since the main causes the apparent wind to increase around the head sail.If I run it lower, where most of the head sail is,would this create greater driving force to the head sail?Since the 150% genny comes down to the cabin top,but the main is a couple feet higher. My thoughts were decreasing weather helm, and increasing speed. banding

If you have an "old" style boat you should have a band (black electrical tape) placed at 3'6" above the deck then a second band 21' from the top of the lower band. If racing the sail "must" stay between these two bands. If your boat is a "new" style the lower band would be placed at 3'3" above the deck with the top band again placed at 21' from the top of the lower band. There is also a band placed on the boom at 9' 10" from the mast, the foot must again stay within the band. If your planing on racing your boat your sails will also have to be measured.

To decrease weather helm

The tack of your sail should be set at either three feet six inches or three feet three inches above the mast step as previously described. The height of your sail will have little to do with weather helm. Aside from a new stiff main, you could propably decrease weather helm most easily my tightening up the forestay turnbuckle which should bring the top of the mast more forward.
