I bought a 2001 Catalina 400 (hull 233). Love my boat. Got with a group and started doin a little racing. I do not plan any modifications to my catalina 400 to reduce weight,etc..If I wanted a racing sailboat, I would probably buy a J-Boat(J-105). But I would appreciate some ideas of how to point better, etc. Anything else out on this or others sites would be appreciated.

Prop

William/Bill, The biggest thing you can do is install and folding or feathering prop if you currently have a fixed blade. The drag on a 3 blade fixed prop is pretty big. I installed a feathering Maxprop and love it. The difference on a 2001 C36 is an extra knot in boatspead in 15 knots of wind. Thats a big difference racing. Race witht he watertanks near empty. Good Luck... Regards, Chris

400's can do well relatively

At the LISCA (LI Sound Catalina Assoc) annual regatta last weekend the overall in Class and Overall winner was a C400 raced by Bob Flemming. He had C380 and C42's in his class. Good boat, but I assume that the crew has a lot to do with it also

Prop for racing

I have replaced the prop on our 400 with a maxi prop and love it. However, if you are looking for a less expensive prop, I do have a two bladed folding prop that I have never used. We purchased the prop when we bought the boat as a spare. If interested call me at 509 750 1598.

Autoprop or Maxi prop???

I really appreciate the resposes on racing a Catalina 400. I planned to replace my 3 blade prop before racing. I have looked at both the autoprop and the maxiprop at the Miami Boat shows. The autoprop claims 25% more speed than the standard 3 blade under power. I would appreciate comments from those that have experience or information about the pro's and con's of both. THANKS!!!

Maxprop

I have the Maxprop and love it. I don't think you can go wrong on either of these props. Regards, Chris

It does have more speed at the same RPMs

I had a 3 blade which I changed for an Autoprop. And it is all true about the increased efficiencies while motorsailing, You can go much further on the same amount of fuel, and if your engine is underpowered, it'll squeek out as much thrust as possible from your engine. I do beleive that it has helped quite a bit with sailing, but I don't beleive it helps as much as the maxiprop, especially in very light winds and/or slower speed under sail.

Tom, please respond

Tom, Do you have much growth on your autoprop in warm water? Compare to the growth you had on your 3 blade. How does growth impair the performance of the autoprop? Thanks, Bill

I have my boat in Long Island sound, but the water

does get warm here in the summer (80's). Do I get growth on my autoprop, well yes some..Not a whole lot, but some..But not any more than I got on my fixed 3-blade I used to have or on my previous boats. I don't paint my prop and I don't think anybody has figured out how to really prevent growth on it up here. In have put things on it (e.g. vaseline) but most bthings only last a monbth or two
