Hi all. I'm a new owner of a Catalina 27. I'm interested to hear tips from those who know about racing these boats. Are there specific things that I can do, or should know, to make my boat go faster? All thoughts on the matter valued. Cheers from wintery Hobart.

Too general

Your question is really too general to provide much guidance. Books can be written on the subject. Do you race with spinnakers in your area? Do you have a tall rig or standard? What kind of sails? Outboard or inboard? Are you doing short afternoon races or longer overnights? You can get the most good info by relating an experience ("In our 1st club race of the season. I was on a beam reach, had nasty weather helm. I was on starboard tack in 12 knots, 120 up, the traveller all the way out, vang on hard, backstay off, when I was passed by another 27, he had..."), and asking for opinions as to what you were doing wrong or the other guy was doing right.

Is your hull tuned?

There are templets that you can fine tune you Catalina 27 that make the hull VERY SLIPPERY. I would say that a net gain of a .5 knot increase with really doing nothing else to the hull. These templets, made a huge difference in the way my boat handled and added more speed. This is feathering the hull on the haul out and tuning it. Once the hull is tuned the results are pleasing in the way the boat handles:) I could be talked into selling these at a deep discount. - Wildcat

Racing

New Racing sails! Tune the rig. Backstay adjuster, cunningham. Clean bottom!

what mick said, and ...

... a practiced crew. C27's don't do a particularly good job of accelerating, so when the crew makes a mistake, you pay for it for a long time. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake
