Hi all: Help needed ! Our yacht club owns 22 footer that many of us want to race in our local beer can races. Our board of directors is split on this. Some think it is "dangerous", a "hazard to our boat", etc. I and others feel racing is the next step in the "learning and enjoyment" process of sailing. Our insurance covers us. Any thoughts?

About racing.

A well used definition of a race is "any two human beings going in the same direction, regardless of vehicle." Sailors usually agree that any other sailboats on the water in their area constitutes a race. Now about your question. Racing is no more dangerous than sailing. It requires equipment in good repair and its safe usage. It is no more a hazard to your boat than normal sailing. It is usually an accepted thought that racing is the fastest way to learn how to sail and will lead to better understanding of sail and boat control. I would think that the directors of your local "beer can" races or members of other local sailing clubs can help your group come to a better understanding of the local racing scene. I do some local racing with my C22 and it is a ball. In 4 years the boat has not suffered any failures or damage. Good Luck, Ray

amazing!!!

I can't believe that any yacht club would not be supportive of its membership if it wanted to race. My advice to you is to change the board or change clubs.
