Hi John,

Sounds like the boat will be pretty heavy!
Are you sailing singlehand?
I set sail with my Vega from nearby Amsterdam on 12 May, with 2 friends, and lots of stuff (food, water, spares, etc). The boatwas in the water up to the level of the antifouling edge. Made 1 leg to Falmouth and a second to Cascais-Portugal, and caught 2 gales in the Atlantic. I think I left the boat overcanvassed with such a heavy load and had light damage to the mast support and water tank bulkhead, all thing I could manage myself, but in the future would reduce the sail surface more than what suggested in the Vega owner's manual.
The leg frm Falmouth to Cascais was almost 1'000 NM as we lead 250 degrees till log 10 west, to avoid Biscay and go out of the continental platform. Because of this long leg, 4 10L extra diesel proved useful as we had 2 days of no wind and at times wind on the nose.
In Portugal, Cascais is quite expensive, 32 euros for the Vega, while other marina's around Lisbon ask about 24.
I have now reached, singlehand, Cadiz. Here, in Port America Marina, the Vega fee is 9.3 euros!! Waiting for the right wind to cross Gibraltar strait and enter the Med.
I have been using the navionics maps on ipad and iphone: very useful and handy. The Reeds Almanac proved invaluable, more updated and precise than the navionivc charts.
I don't see a fishig line in your list, maybe you could enjoy fishing along the way. I did, and so far the only thing I fished was the Vega's prop...
A pressure pot is also useful.
If you sail singlehand, consider using a bit longer mooring lines, at least for the ones for the boat front, so that you can jump down from the cockpit with the front and rear mooering lines in your hand.
What I missed was a way to get the Weather forecast. I counted on a short wave radio, expecting to get BBC Europe, not knowing that the service is not available anymore. So consider a device the get the meteo.

Fair winds under blue skies!

Thanks to all....

Marco - yes the boat is VERY heavy... I keep looking at the
waterline and wishing I had painted it a bit higher! I am
singlehanded and feeling very nervous about the whole thing - I guess
it is a combination of fear of the unknown and my inexperience. I
have yet to sail on my own yet - although this will be remedied soon
and although I have crewed to Portugal before I was just a spare part
and not given any responsibility - other than washing up and making
tea! i will buy a fishing rod - thanks for the suggestion! The price
of marinas may be academic because I am so bad at parking I may decide
to keep going to avoid embarrassment!

Tom - I have the sales receipt from the brokers but it does not
mention VAT? Not sure what to do about that? Epirb is registered and
my holding tank is a bucket at the moment - I shall re-assign a spare
jerry can! I have a website - not really ready to go public yet but
it's at ....

..... not much there at the moment - I am hoping to get web access en-
route and add stuff. Just noticed that yours is mailasail - does it
work ok?

John - Yes - I was hoping that an overnight to Kinsale will be a good
icebreaker for me (do you know it - is it easy enough to get into -
tides etc?) It would be great to see a friendly face if you can get
there - plan so far is to arrive on or about the 7th July but who
knows! I will keep you posted. (or I could head for Limerick - makes
no difference to me - I just stuck a pin in the map!)Can I ask..... you guys who have set off..... did nerves start to get
the better of you? I keep running through all the things that may go
wrong and wishing I had spent more time on repairs and wondering if I
should buy more safety equipment but the reality is I have no more
room - how you fit three people on board I will never know! Maybe I
just need to get some experience under my belt!

Thanks to all,

Cabin Boy John

Sounds like a great trip! Are you comfortable enough with the Navik?...
Might take some bungies along, they work long enough to make coffee (or
tea). Chuck on Lea Lea used them exclusively crossing from Hawaii.

Hi John.
Kinsale is def a good choice. All tides all weather access. The YC has good facilities.
And Kinsale has good pubs restaurants etc.
Finally good chandleries a few miles away in Cork.

(Although I live in Limerick I have to admit it would be a huge detour. )

Look forward to a meet up if it works out.

Good luck with the final prep and first stage of your voyage.

John

I John,

I crossed Biscay alone from Falmouth although a solid F6 all the way down from the NE in May 2010 (so I feel I cheated a bit, but that was my only condition to sail down here, wind from a stern and hard), I have also done a few single handed experience. When my wife is pregnant I take off during the early hrs and then try to arrive before she wakes up since she gets very sea sick.

This is my experience:

1) Yes anxiety is always a problem for me, for that I have a war cry nothing much than clapping twice and a very loud and angry whoo waa! and for me it all goes away, nevertheless it only works for the moment you are taking off, not all the building up, keep busy is the only solution for the "long term" planning ones.

2) You can only do as good as you can and if you know something is not done properly it will come and bite you in the arse, Vegas are very simple and very strong but they need love and is better to give it to the vega as soon as something crops up (even if you are out at sea).

3) Forget a time frame, today for example I was going to go and move my vega from Gibraltar, it was very foggy I gave my self about 10 excuses why not too go and I did not till this evening, one of them was "the number of ships inside the bay" when I went out this eve, I saw 4 big ones anchored just were I had to go through.

4) I am an accountant, if you bought the boat in the EU and you have a receipt for it from an EU broker, I am quite sure that is ok, it does not says anything about VAT because you paid none.

5) I am unsure if the regulations have changed lately but I have only been boarded once by an authority and it was between spain and portugal, they came in, looked down the companion way and filled in a form, gave me a green copy and said "if anyone in spain and within the next 6 weeks boards you again, just show them the slip". I was in Morocco 3 weeks ago and I probably go there from Gibraltar 2 or 3 times a year, again, nothing.

I saw your web page and I think that you seem to be approaching this challenge properly, doing the boat up, getting close a personal, developing the skills to understand local currents, tides and winds effects. A Reeds almanac is an invaluable aid in this adventure.

Keep well, see the world and tell us about it.

Cheers

I just got John Letcher's book on self steering, and since you already have
extra tackle, here is a link to a couple of ideas similar to what I have
found in his book. It mite be something for you to read on one of your fine
sailing days ahead. Sheet-to-Tiller Self Steering
