Friend is looking at 42' boat that reportedly has significant blisters below the waterline. He's trying to make a WAG on what it might cost to peel and reglass. I'm checking archives, but anyone have current ballparks?

Herrington harbor North

We actually purchased our boat just south of annapolis in Herrington Harbor North, We hauled for survey at lunch time, short haul....We and surveyor discovered blisters, lots of,,(This was 5 seasons ago),,,At that point Herrington harbor North, represented themselves as one of the bays premier blister repair centers, so we had them give us an estimate to peel, glass ect,,,at that point the estimate was $18,000. for our 46' boat,,,,so we negotiated an adjustment with the seller and all happy,,,well at least informed....so I guess $18,000 5 years ago vs the $20K now all seams relative....so divided by foot and Im guessing your friends boat will be around $18-$19,000....makes one pause and think.

Rent a Peeler?

I had read somewhere that one can "rent" a peeler. Works so much faster than a sandblaster.... You might "DIY". I do not know if this is true - but it might be worth following up on. --jerry

there is a sailboat 2 stands away

That went to LOWES, and purchased 3 cheap rotary planners, for woodworking....and did just that, peeled his keel,,,layed the fiberglass, faired ect......he said it worked fine..( he actually talked with the guy that was going to do my peel,,,then he asked if he could work/ apprentice with him while he worked on other boats in the yard,,,he did, learned what he needed, then purchased all materials from him then did his keel)..however points to consider...make sure the hull that is peeled is a solid core, and be mindfull of the depth of the peel...neighbor said, when 1 motor burned out or when the blades were spent he would just toss and go on to the next planner....I looked into renting a professional peeler, but came to the roadblock of induatrial use/ contractor license requirered, ect..the units are pretty exspensive..even though my hull was a mess,,,,grinding seamed like an "easier" solution.

Yup, that's about what I'm hearing...

high start point he's hearing is $18.5, +/- depending on circumstances once they get into it. But if the seller will pay, it's a deal. Of course, there is such a broad school of thought on the whole blister issue, it's hard to say what's best. I gotta haul out soon for bottom job. Those pics here made me swallow hard. Thanks guys.
