Quiet Flush Toilets? Really...?

I have “quiet flush toilets” on my Hunter. They have three options, just add water, just flush, and flush and add water. The problem is that these “quiet flush toilets” sound like a C141 transport jet winding up for take off. My gosh they are loud… Where’s the quiet part…? Just wondering if anyone else out there has the same complaint…

Sounds a lot like "marketing" to me. I have the same and it's the same! Better than a hand pump I suppose.

Reminds me of when low flush toilets came out. I remember seeing these instructions somewhere:

How to use a regular 3 gallon flush toilet.

1) Use
2) Flush

How to use a 1 gallon flush toilet.

1) Flush to be sure lines are clear.
2) Use.
3) Flush.
4) Plunge and Flush
5) Flush again to be sure lines are clear.

They have gotten better since but this principle crops up again and again in our solution to problems.

There actually are quiet toilets...

However, naming any toilet that uses raw water (sea, lake, river) "quiet flush" takes real imagination. 'Cuz contrary to what most people think, it's not the discharge pump and macerator that make at least 75% of the noise, it's the INTAKE pump. Eliminate the intake pump--which is done in toilets designed to use pressurized flush water--and you have a much quieter toilet. Unfortunately you can't accomplish that by connecting a sea water toilet to the fresh water system...that's a MAJOR no-no for a couple of reasons: sea water toilets are designed to PULL in water...pushing water through 'em can knock the seals, o-rings and gaskets out of whack. And sea water toilets are not equipped with the necessary failsafe protective devices to protect the fresh water from e-coli contamination. The only way to get a quieter toilet is a NEW toilet.

But even in toilets designed to pressurized fresh water, there's still a wide range in the noise level...nowhere near the level of raw water toilet, but it would still be a stretch to call some of 'em actually "quiet." The Raritan Elegance is by far the quietest out there these days...Jabsco's so-called "Quiet Flush" models are the noisiest.

My Hunter sailboat has a Jabsco Quiet Flush model 37045-1092 12 volt, 10 amp electric toilet. It works very well with one pump, low power consumption and can be replaced for less than $400. Good option if you want a cost effective electric toilet.
