I was thinking of relocating my two batteries from the starbord, aft section of the boat (next to the outboard motor) into the cabin under the seats on the port side. My thought was to get weight off the back and end of the boat and to distribute it into the center of the boat, and on the port side, opposite of the motor. There seems to be a perfect fit on what appears to be the outer rim of the water ballast tank under the seat. I have attached a photo to better illustrate my idea. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, or saw any problems, with this idea. I would appreciate your comments. Thanks, Bob.

Just moved mine...
Bob, I ended up moving my batteries to the forward locker under the V-berth on my H26. I know the 260 has the water tank there but I found a G27 battery box wouldn't fit under the settees. A couple of things to think about... I installed 50Amp fuse holders at each battery in case there's ever a short in the lines. I also gasketed each hole I cut through fiberglass to ensure the cables wouldn't chafe. I left the original wiring behind the aft berth (also the original fuse) and ran 4AWG to a battery switch mounted on the wall below the stove. From there I ran through the settee lockers to the batteries. You'll find a hollow closed off section aft of the bilge pump that you'll have to run through to get to the aft lockers. All in all it took me the better part of a Saturday and much cursing to complete but I think the boat will sail better with the weight better distributed. It had a noticeable squat before.

I located our batteries under the helm seat on a false floor. Easy to service, no worries about fumes, means they are dead centreline and does not effect the handle. Regards.

I have three type 27 gel batteries on board :
1. "normal position" aft stbd behind the access door 2. Head outboard the port-a-potty fwd of the wet locker (made a shelf over it) 3. port side quarter berth all the way aft I use the gel because I don't have to worry about gasing. The boat seems to be balanced well. I have a 1.7 CU ft refridgerator,TV/DVD, autopilot, and next year A/C (I'll have to run the Honda 1000 gen. for it)

With a 5000lb boat, 75 lbs of batteries isn't going make the boat noticably off-balanced. The battery boxes are mounted with U-bolts to the storage walls as well as the battery switch. That where my charger, inverter and shore power cables reside also. Makes them easy to access.

Moved in front of head
There was a posting earlier this year about the 260 listing to starboard when in the marina. I solved this problem by moving a pair of size 27 (large) marine batteries under the port cabin seats just forward of the head bulkhead. I ran the cables through a hole next to the water line, then inside the closet under the porta-potie platform, under the berth (passing near the bilge pump) and reconnecting to the original battery cables aft of the berth. The boat is now level; counterbalancing the outboard motor and galley. It also trailers better by moving the pendulum weight from the rear overhang to over the axle. I built a sled, carpeted the bottom, and secured it to the head bulkhead. See attached picture.

While sailing last year I had a to much weight on the port side. So I decided to move the batteries while I had the boat on the trailer. They are nicely located in the aft side of the v-berth. I have easier access to them. With my larger water tank on the stbd side I should be balanced this year.

bATTERY REALOCATION
I move mine to under the V-berth on the center line. With the outboard on the starboard side and the water tank and cooler on the port side we balance pretty well. Also gives more ready access to needed items in the cabin. Mike
