QUICK Outboard motor question

I currently have a 1988 Force 9.9hp 2 stroke outboard on my 27 foot Cal. It is on its last leg, so I will need a new one. The local dealer has a 8hp 2004 Yamaha 4 stroke for sale for $1,000. From what I can tell, it is in perfect condition and it has only 18 hours on it. The dealer will change the oil and everything. It is electric start (the old was pull) and electric tilt. It charges the battery as the motor is running.

My question is this, will the 8 hp work to push my 27 foot sailboat? The old 9.9 pushed it fine, and I would assume this 8hp might be just as strong if not stronger, since the 9.9 had a much smaller 2 blade proppeller, while this one has a 3 blade larger and displacing more water.

Thank you for your advice. Please also comment on the price. Is 1,000 a good buy for a 2004 yamaha 4 stroke long shaft with high propulsion?

Buy it.
I have the same motor on my Hunter 26 and it moves it just fine. If it has only 18 hours on it, it is well worth it.

It should move your boat fine. The 8HP 4 stroke probably puts out more torque than the 9.9HP 2 stroke and it can drive a larger prop. The price sounds good for that model engine in good condition. I would try to get some sort of limited warranty from the dealer and get it in writting.

I have a 8hp 2 stroke on my Hunter 27, it does really well at "crusing" RPM's (around 4kts), but I really could use an extra 1 or 2 hp when I encounter rougher water or weather / need to get above 5kts under power. I agree with the comments that the 4 stroke will probably do better as it will have more torque, allowing you to use a higher pitch prop, and probably do fine.

As for the charging of the battery, verify it has a voltage regulator on it. I just found out mine (along with most 2 stroke) does not. I discovered this after installing a solar charging system that has my batteries constantly topped off, now when I run the engine at mid throttle, the voltage spikes to 16v+ because the batteries aren't absorbing the charge.

I'm looking at available voltage regulators / charge controllers that I can add in for this now...
