Hi All,

I am looking to put in a small waste holding tank (7 gal) and would like to make it semi-permanent. For the most part, it would be permanent with pump out hoses attached, but I would like to easily (relatively speaking) remove it if necessary as there are not many pump outs where I go. This would be a similar concept to the Raritan portable tank http://www.raritaneng.com/products/holding_tanks/compact_tanks.html but the tank would be remote. I have a spot to do this and would have all the fittings on the top of the tank so I am looking to see if anyone has used/recommend a type of 1.5" quick connect fitting (Cam-lock or equivalent, etc) for the intake an discharge lines. There are some obvious challenges with the project (weight, potential spillage/drippage, securing it properly), but something like this would be ideal for me.

Thank you.

PS: I can't use a 5gal porta-potty - too high. The smaller potties are too "small"

Quick lok

I used one between the head and the tank for clear out purpose just in case it clogs. It is the same quick connect they use at pumpouts so it is secure and no leak. There are two cams on the side of the female and a grove on the male side. I have an additional male but filled with epoxy to act as a plug.

You can usually find them at farming or industrial automotive supplies. They are hard fibre reinforced plastic in black.

Quick lok

Just noticed you are in Ottawa area.

I bought the 1 1/2 " quick lok from Princess Auto. Only a few dollars each.

After having great difficulty changing out a macerator, I found a PVC quick disconnect from Home Depot for about 5 bucks. Now I just loosen the nuts on the macerator spin the disconnect and I can lift the pump out for service.

Before you settle for just 7 gal tank

Have you checked the Ronco Plastics (no relation to the VegoMatic Ronco) catalog? It's online at http://www.ronco-plastics.net They make top quality tanks and have more than 400 shapes and sizes, over 100 of which are non-rectangular...so if you're looking only at rectangular tanks now, I'd bet they have a non-rectangular tank at least 10 gallons that'll fit the same space. And they install fittings in the sizes and locations specified by the customer when they make the tank.

Once you've found a tank that'll fit, you can order it from the sbo.com chandlery here for a much lower price than you'd pay for the same tank from Raritan (Raritan gets most of their tanks from Ronco).

And btw...be sure to put a y-valve or shut off valve ahead of the quick connect coupling for your macerator so you can shut off the flow from the tank to service the macerator...'cuz no one EVER discovers that the macerator isn't working when a tank is empty!

BUT...

Where do you plan to use the boat? 'Cuz Ottowa is several hundred miles from any waters where it would be legal to dump a tank. To do that, you'd have be in open ocean at least 3 miles from the nearest point on the whole US coastline. There are no current restrictions on how far you have to be offshore in Canadian coastal waters in the Maritime Provinces, but all inland waters in Ontario and Quebec are "no discharge" and so are all the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. In fact, on Lake Champlain it's even illegal to have any overboard discharge plumbing installed on a boat and they rigidly enforce it!

So unless you're either planning to take the boat to the coast or only intend to use the macerator to dump the tank at an RV dump station or a sewer line at home, there's no point in installing it.

7 Gal

Thanks Peggy, I will look at Ronco to see if I can rig a larger tank. Maybe I will get lucky.

Regarding the dumping zones, there was no intention to dump overboard. It will have a normal pumpout hooked up (for Marina's), but I was just looking for connector fitting options to take the tank ashore if needed. I won't be needing a macerator, I think it was just referenced as an example by Sailm8.

Thanks again.

Re: 7 Gal

This was discussed on another forum thread and the suggestion was made that having two tanks for the porta-pot might be a better idea. A 7 gallon tank full will weigh about 60 pounds net plus the dry weight of the tank. It will be an awkward load at best and I wouldn't care to have to lug it very far.
