Questions on Hunter 23

I just bought a Hunter 23 year 1978. I would like to find out what thetwo wood straps on side of cockpit are for (the fiberglass is indented behind wood straps) Also my head stay goes down inside my anchor locker. Can a furler be installed? Thankyou Bob

The wooden straps were intended to be hiking straps. They look great but are more form than function. And, Yes, a furler can be added. You need to extendthe pennant up above the deck line.
