Folks: Can anyone help locate the race handicap rating for the 240? I don't get my boat until the weekend, but several guys at the club say the 240 is relatively fast, especially in light air. The old salts are mocking me....claiming their scared. "He's got a clean hull, new sails, light boat....better keep an eye on the new guy!". Yea, right. They know very well that my #1 goal is to simply securing her (in one piece) after negotiating the first landing (in huge current). Going slow against them is the least of my worries. Any tips on how to race the 240? A refernce to the 240 radials is worth a virtual beverage (or actual beverage if you live in the southern Cheseapeake). Regards to all.....Mark

Racing

Mark where are you going to be racing your H240. I race out of Little Creek. You should do well in lighter air. Are you racing a windward leeward course. Are you racing boats that are mostly larger and quicker prior to handicap. Important off the wind to raise your centerboard and get the crew weight forward so the transom is dragging. Dont allow anyone in the stern rail seats. Ideal crew is 3. 1 on helm, 1 on mainsheet, 1 on jib. Get a whisker pole for the jib. Dont sail wing in and wing unless you are sailing hull speed. Quicker to sail a broader reach sailing extra distance but at faster speeds. Know the area. In Little Creek the tide flushing in or out of the bay can make 2+ knot current. When its going your direction get in it. When its not stay closer to shore out of it. At 15 knots reef even if the other boats aren't. If you dont have the rail meet to keep this boat flat you will sail faster with a reefed main and a full jib to winward. I often reef upwind and shake out the reef downwind. reef again upwind. This can be done quickly once you have a system for your crew and mark the positions on the halyard.

PHRF RATING (NOT CONFIRMED)

A contact on this board who may wish to disclose who he is told me he raced in the Chesapeake with a 258 PHFR Rating. I tried to see him listed on the Chesapeake PHRF list but did not find him. He may not have renewed his rating yet this year. I plan to file for a rating in my local waters. I will post it when I get it. I previously asked on this Forum if others had a PHRF for a H-240 but to date have no replies.

Ratings

There are 3 boats listed in the 2004 PHRF book. Alum Creek & Chesapeake have boats rated at 258 (Base), and Oklahoma City has a boat listed at 255 (Base). To get a good rating, you need to apply to your local PHRF ratings board, and then RACE! The more you race, the more info. The more boats of a class that race, the better info to establish the base. I hope this helps, Steve

I had a PRH of 258 last 3 seasons. I have not renewed it this seson. I sail out of Little Creek on the Southern Bay.

Racing the 240

I think the 240 is a slow boat, looking at the specs. Here are the specs of some boats to compare with: BoatLOADraftDispLWLSailBallastD/LB/DSA/DSpd Colgate 262625' 6260020.028312501450.48236.0 Ultimate 242424' 4204021.2355750960.37356.2 Capri 22222' 6225020.02296501260.29216.0 tall rig25023 Precision231' 11245020.02488501370.35216.0 Catalina 222'6254619.32057081570.28175.9 5 Hunter 240241' 6360022.124213001490.36166.3 O'Day 2322'92'3308519.524612001860.39185.9 Catalina 250251'8 ,5'9420021.326510501950.25166.2 Precision 2120'91'9187517.52036001560.32215.6 Hunter 21621.51'125018.8252500850.40345.8 I believe I finished about 5th out of 12/13 boats.

I would disagree with you that the H240 is a slow boat. You need to compare apples to apples though. The Colegate, Ultimate, and Capri are designed as club racers. The H240 is a cruiser. I'll take my H240 straight up without a handicap against the other boats you mentioned. The only boat you have on your list I haven't sailed on or against is the H216 so I'm not sure how would stack up with that. I no when it comes to accomodations after the race and over nighting I'll take my H240 over the entire list.

Mark are you racing in Willoughby or are you racing Little Creek? If your racing Little Creek I'll see you out there in a few weeks when my rudder gets in.
