I have an Oday 222 that I sail on Lake Monroe in Indiana, and a son who lives in Chicago (Belmont area off Lake Shore Drive). This is our first Summer of sailing but I would like to venture onto Lake Michigan once I have attained enough knowledge and experience to do it safely. Not attempting the Southern Cross, just a little day sailing out in front of the skyline.
What would I need to know with regard to commercial traffic, channels, currents and anything else that differs from the flatwater lake I'm normally on? I've observed the conditions the last few times up there, and fully expect the wind and waves to be significantly heavier.
I'm also assuming one of the marinas along Lake Shore will accommodate visiting boaters with access to a launch ramp and guest slip for a day,
and I would expect to pay fees for both. Is that accurate?
