I have just taken delivery of a 2002 Catalina 30 Mark III and have several questions for owners of recent model C30's. For instance, where do you recommend I mount two fire extinguishers in the cabin? What do I need to keep an eye on in the way of things that may/can/will go wrong? Thanks, jrm

Don't forget one here

The lazarette in the cockpit. If the boat is on fire from below, do you really want to have to go into the fire just to put it out?

New C30

Hi John: Congrats on a GREAT BOAT! I have a 1996 MKIII #6371, What is your hull #? As for ext. I do a little overkill on safety items. I have one 10BC mounted high on the forward side of the head door, just aft of the sliding door to the V-berth, a 1A10BC under the chart table against the magazine rack. and a 10BC inside the port cockpit locker. You should have a min. of two and one of those should be ABC rated. You can e-mail me at westwind6371@attbi.com if you have any other questions. Dave

extinguishers

John: Good luck with your catalina 30.Yes you should have more than one fire extinguisher on board. Catalina 30 is a good boat to sail. I have a Catalina 30 mark2 sail 6140. Good luck sail in 2002.

Best extinguishers

You should be able to extinguish most fires before they get going with a 1A10BC extinguisher. If your second extinguisher is a 2A10BC then you will have much more ability extinguishing a fire that has gotten a little bigger. I carry a third fire extinguisher which is a CO2...This comes from force of habit and works well. There is no clean-up with a CO2. As a professional fireman, that was always my first choice and I convinced many other firemen that it was the extinguisher of choice..(since we additionally provided cleanup after extinguishment)..Remember that extinguishers are for fires while in their incindary stage and to use a blanketing effect as you sweep the chemical back and forth at a safe distance...P.S. My CO2 is a 5 lb extinguisher...good luck
