Peggy, I am hoping to get your opinion on vent issues related to the size and the location for a vent hose to use with a seaLand traveler toilet and tank fresh water combo unit. After some research (and your recommendation) I have decided that installing a SeaLand traveler is the right toilet for me. I will use the expensive (and correct) hoses for the discharge pumpout and vent, and I have pressurized fresh water to provide for flushing. My question is about the vent. I believe that you have recommended using a 1" or 1.5" vent line to assure that the potty has enough oxygen. I also believe you recommend running a vent line at no more than a 45 degree slope, or possibly including two vents to allow for more air circulation. So here are my questions... The seaLand Traveler has a 5/8" vent opening, and their installation instructions recommend that you run the vent straight up from the toilet. I would like to know what you feel is good / best. (i) Should I make a bigger vent opening and use a larger vent hose (and how would I make a bigger or new vent opening)? (ii) Should I add a second vent to the system to get more venting (again, how do you do that)? (iii) Is there a way (and does it make sense) to use a larger hose with the 5/8" vent fitting? (iv) Lastly, how should I run the vent hose (completely vertically, or at an angle -- what angle would be ideal) and how high above the waterline is ideal for the vent (the deck is about 5 ft above the water line, so I could go anywhere from a foot or two, up to five feet). Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have already ordered your book and plan to use KO and CP once I have the head installed. I have searched the archives, but I didn't find answers to these questions. Sincerely, - Confused.

Very nice system!

The SeaLand 711-M28 Marine Traveler is a very nice system...but are sure you have room in the head for the tank? 'Cuz it has a footprint of about 21" x 22"...bigger than will fit in the head on most sailboats. So check your measurements carefully! To answer your questions... Cut a larger hole in the tank for a vent. The easiest way to do that: put a threaded plug (which you can get from any decent hardware store) in the existing fitting...use a hole saw to cut a new larger hole...1" should be big enough. Use a plain ol' bulkhead/mushroom thru hull for the new vent fitting...barb and nut on the outside. Put a rubber gasket under the flange and the nut to seal it. Do all this BEFORE you mount the bowl! :) I don't think you need a second vent. You'll also use a bulkhead/mushroom fitting for your vent thru-hull. On a sailboat, how high to mount it depends on how far the boat heels...it needs to stay out of the water most of the time. So if you put your rails in the water, it'll have be just below the toe rail, with a high clamshell over it. If you don't heel very far, it can be lower on the hull...but I'd still put a clamshell on it. As for how to run the vent line, just do the best you can to keep it as close to the parameters described in my book as possible.
